    Hi,

I've just had a problem with my internet connection start suddenly (not associated with anything I've done, eg. new software etc).

Pages are now very slow or impossible to load AND downloading files is almost impossible - previously both these were fine.

I find I can jump-start a page load by clicking on a few items in my favorites bar until one works, then I try the page I really want and it will load.

Again with downloading I can sometimes jump-start the process by pausing and resuming the download. Then a little of the file will download before it stalls BUT by continuing to "pause and resume" I can occasionally get the whole file to download. Usually though the pages will "time-out" before I get any success.

This problem applies whatever browser I use, eg IE8 & 9, Firefox or Opera.
I'm running Windows Vista 32bit btw.

The problem PC is a desktop wired to a Belkin modem router. Because of the downloading problems I downloaded your Malware cleaning files onto my laptop which is wirelessly connected to the same Belkin. As a test of the wired Belkin connection I switched off the wireless and connected the laptop using the desktop's Belkin cable but it performed perfectly - so it seems to be the PC causing the problem.

Occasional, in the Network and Sharing Centre I've noticed the network disconnecting from the internet.

I have followed your Malware removal instructions but no improvement, the only tool that wouldn't complete was RootRepeal. I have attached the logs for the other 4 tools - SAS, MGTools, MB & Combofix.

I would be very grateful for any suggestions for curing this.

    Kind regards,

    Mike

I just tried using Opera again and it works fine BUT IE9 is still just as described.

Also just installed Firefox again and this also works fine - so just IE with the problem.

Yes you posted them in the Networking forum. Malware scan logs belong in this forum. I'm merging your other thread into this one.

Now goto the below link and follow the instructions for running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky
    • Be sure to attach your log from TDSSKiller
    .

Now please also download MBRCheck to your desktop.

See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Okay so now I can say why there was no improvement. And that is because you are not having malware problems. All of your logs are clean.

I'm going to move this thread to the Software Forum ( which is probably a better choice than the Networking Forum where you started ). Also I will give you cleanup instructions to remove items from the malware cleaning procedure.

Since you are not having malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.

Hi, I know we're not supposed to bump threads but it's been 11 days since Chaslang moved this to Software so I'm guessing I've got lost - apologies if not.

Anyway my problem continues, hope you can help.

    Regards,

    Mike

Turn Off, or unplug, the modem for about thirty seconds.
Turn it back ON and wait about a minute so it can reset.

    Download SpeedGuide.net TCP Optimizer.

It will backup your current settings before making any changes, so you can UnDo the changes if necessary.

Thanks mjnc, I've done that but it's just the same, IE9 won't even load my default page - "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"

Thanks Guys, my router firmware is up to date and I tried the suggested links but still the same problem.

I guess I could just give up IE and use Opera which works fine.

Ok, since doing that I can't burn CDs with itunes. It says there's a problem with registry settings and suggests I re-install itunes. I've done that but I get the same message and can't burn CDs.

Please can you tell me how to undo what you had me do, if possible.

    Many thanks.

Disabling the broadcast flag in the registry and disabling ipv6 should not have caused a CD burning issue. You can reenable IPv6 as described in my link, just recheck the box next to IPv6 and click install.

The broadcast flag can be changed back by setting the value of DhcpConnEnableBcastFlagToggle to 0.

Have you tried doing a system restore to a date before the changed.

    Thanks tgell,

I guess it could have been the "Tweaking.com - Windows Repair (All in One)".

I've done a System Restore (which took about 4 hours) and all is well.

I think I'm reconciled to giving up IE now and am getting used to Opera.

I still have this niggling problem outstanding where I open a spreadsheet and only part of it displays. If I highlight the offending area with my mouse the missing bits appear.

    Any ideas?

Wow, 4 hours for a system restore.

I am not sure what your spreadsheet problem is except maybe a possible graphics problem relating to the driver. Did this problem happen after the system restore?

I only use IE for Windows Update and Firefox for everything else.

    Thanks tgell,

Ok, well since the display problem is cross-application I re-installed the display device driver and the display problem has completely gone away.

With regard to the IE9 problem, this is browser specific, ie. Opera works but IE (any version) doesn't. I just noticed that when I try using IE the "Currently connected to:" box shows that I'm disconnected from the internet.

Anyway, don't worry unless you've any ideas as I've now got used to Opera and IE now feels strange; amazing how quickly we adapt!!

Thanks for all the help, great to have found Major Geeks.

    Regards,

    Mike

    Thanks for the feedback. :)

I doubt this would be your problem but open IE9 and select Tools>Internet Options>Connections Tab Under Lan setting is the use proxy server box checked? If so clear it after writing down the setting and make sure use Automatic settings is checked.
