In the last two weeks I've cleaned this off 3 machines and it seems it has picked up in the malware forum as well. It's become an epidemic. It's called Internet Security 2010 and it's been around for years but it seems to have gotten more pervasive.

Warning, if you get a pop-up telling you viruses have been detected and click here for a report, DON'T!. This is malware attempting to install on your machine. The next step will be a request for payment to get rid of these.

Who does this crap and how come they aren't traced down and arrested and imprisoned? (But first I'd like a couple of batteries, some jumper cables, and 15 minutes alone with them).:tas

I cleaned a laptop recently with this on it's pretty powerful, the one I encountered had an auto shutdown timer, disabled anti virus, stopped safe mode from working to name just a few symptoms.

I proceeded with basic malware clean up,didn't even get to logs and the whole computer locked up when I tried to run some basic programs.

The said computer had an out of date anti virus and no firewall at least for over a year though,I accepted defeat and re formatted after backing up files.I would have probably done the same even if the computer hadn't stopped working due to the firewall and anti virus even though I hate being beaten.

Have never encountered this one, but from everything I have read and heard, it is a vicious piece of work.

I wonder the same thing...WHO ARE THESE GUYS???

And WHY aren't they tracked down and arrested? I am sure some people must be PAYING the fee that they demand.

Don't we have a Gov't that we PAY TAXES to that is supposed to be looking out for us? (LOL) Opps I FORGOT they only say they care when they are running for re-election. My Bad

In the back of my mind (as crazy as it may seem) I hold Microsoft and the computer manufactures accountable for selling us these devices that ALLOW CRIMINALS to steal our ID's and hijack our computers for ransom or just to terrorize us.
I put it in the same category as: Selling me a car that when I take it on the road the tires fall off and it gets me in accidents that I have to pay for myself, even though it was the car that was FAULTY. ( Bill Gates FIX THE HOLES in ALL your CRAPPY software PLEASE)

OK a little wild but my 2 cents

And YES Internet Security 2010 shut down 2 of my computers and I lost a lot of time at work and it took days to get evevything back to NORMAL

We've been dealing with this in the malware forum before last August.

Examples of some important system files being replaced with malware:
    eventlog.dll
    netlogon.dll
    scecli.dll
    mspmsnsv.dll
    cngaudit.dll

    @ Electro-User
I believe that any operating system enjoying 80% domination (?) of the world market would be targeted by these miscreants, purely for profit or the "I know how to break it" mentality --- why blame Bill Gates?

Well, obviously there's more to using a computer effectively than just buying it and expecting M.S. or the Govt. to be held responsible for what is basically user ignorance.

One of the first rules of common sense, (which aint very common), is that you don't trust anyone and never click on any popup or box. They can claim that you've won the Football Pools or that they are your long lost Grandma, or whatever. Unfortunately, the fake Security Suite ones, which are actually malware themselves, are taking a lot of inexperienced people in of late.

One reason that most malwware designer/spreaders get away with it is that many of them are overseas based, ran by Govs. that often don't give a toss who is being ripped off or computers screwed up.

To use your own car analogy:- Blaming Bill Gates and the Govt. for malware when safeguard rules aren't employed is like a drunk driver, speeding with bald tires, trying to sue G.M. for not building an indestructible car.

Everyone who buys a computer, whether experienced or a newbie, gets a set of instructions with it when purchased, take a couple of mins to sit and read them before entering the big bad web, and 99.9% of the time it lets you know about not clicking on crap, and popups, so don't blame Bill Gates and co' , blame yourself, for not taking the time out to read the instructions first !

I think I spoke too "in general" and didn't express my thoughts clear enough.

Microsoft has had MAJOR Security issues since they came out with Windows 95. They had the means (funds) to hire and employ hackers to hack their own software 24 hours a day to make sure it was as close to Hacker proof as they could get it. Which in the business world is totally IRRESPONSIBLE. Only over the last few years did they finally admit...Hey we're going to concentrate more on security. (Win Defender, maliscious removal tool etc)

They sold us CRAP for years and consumers and small business paid the price for it in lost time, headaches and stolen passwords. (MS hid consumers passwords in the software making the consumer think he was safe BUT the passwords were very easily found but ANY computer geek etc that knew where to find them. ((yeah that was real convenient Bill)))

Our Gov't NEVER stepped up to the plate and said "Hey guys if your going to sell this new product that changes how people do business and consumers do online banking... can you "pretty please" TRY to CLOSE ALL the BACK DOORS so the THIEVES and Cyber terrorists don't try to sneak in when Joe Blow consumer leaves his computer connected to the internet at night and goes to sleep. Or when Joe Blow opens and email from Aunt Rose, that really came from a hacker that just stole all his passwords and contact list.

Not to start a debate but the REALITY is Microsoft should of tried a lot harder to secure their software years ago, BEFORE hackers made a game out of it. (as we all know hackers think MS is a JOKE and that is the challenge for them to hack the MS crappy software) and some Gov't regulations requiring them to make it safer for the consumer and business world would help greatly.

But the past is the past and all people think about is th Billions and Billions of Dollars Microsoft has made. HEY they made all this money so the must be smart. LOFL

Boy, did I start something here or what?

I guess to defend everybody, including M$ and our government, the World Wide Web, as invented by Mr. Gore, was and still pretty much is the Wild Wild West. I don't think anybody, including M$, knew this would also be a playground for pranksters and cons. And, for most of us, that's just the way we like it. We don't want no stinkin government regulations on us, so we'd better go out there with the best armor and weapons we can find.

Unfortunately, not everybody realizes this, thus IS 2010 problems.

    Following seas everybody!:wave:cool

brandypeppy - Sorry I didn't mean to run off and create a debate...I was just commenting on WHY they don't track down people behind crap like Internet Security 2010 ans I guess I vented frustrations I have had in the many years past with all the creeps out there and that does include Mr. Gates and his crappy software.
Just one more thing...LOL...to the newbies...The security issue with the windows platform hasn't been always internet related, meaning you didn't have to click on things or go to a mal site to get hacked. You got hacked while doing nothing but leaving your computer on. It started to get bad in the late 90's into the 2000's. Alot has happened since the 90's and it's been a long headache for many. it has actually improved the last few years. But not much. MS is still crap. and if someone does steal your identity...do you know the U.S. gov't doesn't get involved unless it is over $100K in losses? And that just means they will just look into it.
If they went after these creeps once in a while they might think they might get caught and may think twice before trying to steal. But knowing that the Gov't NEVER goes after them they keep on doing the same thing over and over and over.
Some of you have made some comments with no education on the above.

@hrlow2 -I Work a lot and I read alot of posts usually trying not to get involved. Sorry to run off topic. This is a great forum and site and I hope I didn't muddy it up ;-)

microsoft made a good attempt with fighting off things like this with user account control in vista and (somewhat better) in win 7. There's also a prompt in xp now that asks for permission when installing something. But most leisure users of xp and the interweb have become numb to the amount of "click this and that's" to get something to install and don't pay attention to it anymore, or actually get frustrated over it. I think there needs to be a better way of identifying not only that something wants to install and make changes to your computer, but what it is exactly that wants to do it. every program usually has a setup.exe or install.exe, so who really knows what it is beyond that.

That is probably what pops up in my email all the time. Theres nothing on my pc yet, hope, I shut it down soon as it starts. It's not a particular mail and I don't open any mail, it seems to pop up as I'm leaving.

Take note that this is not the same fake antivirus that goes under the name XP Anti Virus Pro 2010 ....(or 2009/8/7...).

They look very similar in their on screen effects but the executables are totally different.

There was a lot of activity at MG with the 2009 version.
