Internet Security is more of a marketing term in my opinion. To keep your machine clean and running smoothly, you should have the following:

-An up to date Antivirus (preferable one with active scanning, email and messenger protection, and a backup database)
-Good spyware scanner and Anti-spyware tool. An active one helps, but as adware and spyware dont usually harm your system files, scanning frequently works fine.
-a firewall of some sort. If you have a router with a firewall, you probably dont need a tightly secured software firewall (as many slow down older machines).

Here are some free ones that I recommend. There are plenty of good ones, but these are my personal favorite:

    -Avast Antivirus Free Home Edition
    -Lavasoft Ad-Aware
    -Spybot Search & Destroy
-Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall (used to be free, now $10)

I stopped using Kerio a while back (while it was still free), as I am behind a nice hardware firewall, and instead just enabled Windows Firewall.

If you have the above, or a similar combination, your bases for internet security should be nicely covered, provided you practice smart surfing ;) (dont download unknown files, dont browse through shottily made, questionable websites, watch out for phishing scams etc...)

A good free firewall is Comodo Pro.

Stopped using Kerio due to the fact it failed a number of leaktests. Used Kerio for a long time.

Comodo does not use a lot of resources.

Looks like others have some good solutions to kerio :)

If you use the stuff I mentioned (with whichever firewall you choose), you should be well protected and not use up very many system resources. Admittedly, Avast is a little resource intensive (using roughly 40mb right now), but nowhere near as much as the more mainstream ones (Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro). Spybot's SDHelper uses under 4mb, and ad-aware does not have an active scanner (ad-watch) in the free version.
