I had a fake internet scanner popup and locked up computer.
    Went through the cleaning steps.
    Resulting symptoms-

*Internet ceases to function after 1 minute of computer turning on.
    *Messenger seems to still work.
*Zone Alarm icon disappears, and shuts down immediately after I try to restart it.
*Dearest spouse complains cause I'm slow at fixing her computer.

    Thanks for any help!

LOL Hopefully we can appease her.

Important Notice: A new version of SUPERAntiSpyware is available.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this log later.

Open up the Malware Bytes Program > locate the update tab > let it update > re-scan > fix anything it finds and attach the log.

    Uninstall this outdated Java also:

    • Java(TM) 6 Update 21

Uninstall this unless you purposefully installed it yourself.

    • WinPcap 3.1

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    aioiam
    bonbhoe
    a2free
    Registry::

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

You are about 5 months out of date with MGTools, you will need to do the below:

Now go to this MGTools and download the new version of MGtools.exe. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run the new C:\MGTools.exe and attach the C:\MGlogs.zip log that it produces.

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some data on it
    • Right click on the screen and select > Select All
    • Press Control+C
    • Open a notepad and press Control+V
    • now please ATTACH that report to this thread

You must tell me how things are running for you now.

So far so good Kestrel. At one point my Zone Alarm wouldn't shut down and allow me to complete the outlined process.
Tried rebooting etc... finally had to uninstall it.

Now I can at least stay connected to music streams etc.

    Here are the logs.

    Good.

You did not attach the log from MBRCheck, you attached something else instead.

Please re run MBRCheck or attach the correct log if you have it.

You also neglected to attach the MalwareBytes log.

At this point I've had only one redirect.
    But aside from that....
    Seems okay.

    Fresh version of TDSSKiller

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Is it still redirecting? Any kind of browser redirection however occasional is cause for concern.

    • Which browser redirects?
    • Which search engine?
    • Does it occur in safe mode?
    • Have you tried disabling all browser add ons?
    • If it happens with Firefox then an uninstall and a reinstall may have to take place.

Okay... I just had to be sure.... took me awhile to replicate it.

I'm using Mozilla Firefox. It redirected me from Google search engine to a "personals" web page. I can try disable all add ons. It took awhile to replicate the redirect, so it may take me a tiny bit.
    Thanks.

Well, do let me know about all the things I asked.

Also let's do an online scan:

Run this and attach the results.

    Using ESET's Online Scanner

Alrighty Kestrel. Here's my followup. Sorry for the time away. I was out of town.
I'll answer your Q's and include the log of the online scan.

    • Which browser redirects? - I've only been able to reproduce the redirect on Mozilla.
    • Which search engine? Google
    • Does it occur in safe mode?
I can't get it to replicate.
    • Have you tried disabling all browser add ons?
Yes- I can't get it to replicate, but it seemed so random even before.
    • If it happens with Firefox then an uninstall and a reinstall may have to take place.
      Will do.
The online scan showed 29 infected files. I'll include the log.
    Thanks!

Yes, go ahead and back up your bookmarks, then go for an uninstall > re-install of Firefox. Also after doing so, get me new logs and then let me know by say tomorrow after giving it time, how things are running for you.

It very well could be your router. There is a little button on the bottom ( on most models ) to reset it to factory settings. Do that. You may then need to go back into it to set any special setting that you may have set up originally. But do that first and see if that doesn't take care of it.

You can test this theory by connecting directly to your modem and if the redirects stop, then you know it is the router that is infected.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Alright Kestrel. I've reinstalled Mozilla and have surfed around. I've also reset my router. I haven't been able to reproduce any redirects.
Does that mean I'm all good?
    *crosses fingers*

    Here's the logs you requested.
    Thanks

    Then lets just do this:

Also delete all files in the below bold folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
