Hi, I used to have no problem with my network (unsecured), then it became slow so I decided to put a password on the network, but to no avail, the Internet is just as slow or slower then before. I am wondering if I have a virus/malware hogging my Internet (bandwith).

Also I have several virus scanners and firewalls, I was hoping I could get help on which ones I should keep.

    Thanks.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Very dangerous to your security.

You must only have ONE antirvirus program installed. And only ONE firewall installed. So before even attempting the below. Uninstall all but one of each and see how things are working after you reboot your PC. If still having a problem then move on to the below instructions:

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

My computer came with Trend Scanner, and I installed Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Super-Anti Spyware. Can I keep all 3? If not which should I remove?

    Thanks.

I'm not sure how to edit, so I'm going to post a new reply, my computer has Windows Defender (Windows Firewall) and Trend has a firewall. Is it ok to have both?

Are you talking about the free versions of Malwarebytes and SUPERAniSpyware? If so, then they do not provide any active protection and thus do not cause conflicts with anything. Also note that they are not antivirus programs and would not conflict with an antivirus program.

What do you mean by "Trend Scanner" ? Are you talking about TrendMicro Internet Security or something different. I assume you mean TrendMicro Internet Security since you said "Trend has a firewall",

You should only have one firewall enabled!!!!! If TrendMicro did not disable the Windows firewall ( and normally it does ) or if you mistakenly enabled the Windows Firewall then disable the Windows firewall now.

Yes, I meant TrendMicro Security, sorry, how do I check if only one firewall is enabled?

Also is "Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option" safe? And can I have a notepad with the notes from the guides open during the scans?

    Thanks.

Since you did not even tells what version of Windows you are using I cannot be very specific. But if you click Start, and run Control Panel, you should see something about Windows Firewall or Security Center. You should be able to figure out from that whether the Windows firewall is disabled or not.

Yes! Just don't starting deleting anything just because you don't know what it is or because you think it looks strange. We will tell you if anything needs to be removed. In our opinion, it is actually more unsafe to have things hidden. When you do this, you give malware an easy way to hide from your view.

Yes but it always a better idea not to run anything but the scans. That way we know for sure whether to question why something is running. When we see notepad or anything else running that is not a normal necessary part of Windows, we have to question why it was running ( i.e., "were you running such and such and why ). It is the only way we can be sure that malware was not running it. It could even be malware posing as that program. Hence why we want nothing running but what we ask you to run. ;) You could print any info you need to refer to.

Hi, I seem to be having trouble running Super-Antispyware, for some reason when I double click the shortcut, the process runs but nothing opens, clicking on it from the system tray does not work and right clicking the screen freezes it until I kill the process.

Also when I open Rootrepeal it gives me a funny error, "FOPS - DeviceIoControl Error! Error Code = 0xc0000024 Extended Info (0x000000e0)

    I'm using Windows 7.

    Thanks

Since you are running Win 7, have you disabled UAC and rebooted as requested. Also have you disabled your protection software.

As stated in the initial instructions of the READ & RUN ME, just continue on and attach the logs from Malwarebytes, ComboFix, and MGtools which you have not mentioned having any problems with.

Hi, I did turn off UAC and reboot as requested and SuperAnti-Spyware worked but would not update, the last update was June 20th, where might I find SuperAnti-Spyware's log?

Here are the four logs, RootRepeal had a problem at the startup.
    Hopefully this fixes my Internet.

    Thanks.

Also can I turn UAC on again? And can I do so by using the control panel or must I use MGtools to do so?

You are extremely out of date with the version of SuperAntiSpyware that you have installed. Running it's built-in update program only updates the database. Not the program itself. So you need to do the below.

    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this new log.
Note that your log files for SUPERAntiSpyware are saved by the program in the below folder:

    C:\Users\Adminstrator\AppData\Roaming\SUPERAntiSpyware.com\SUPERAntiSpyware\Logs

You should have attached the below log from it:
    Code:
    2011-06-19 4255 "SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log - 06-19-2011 - 23-34-17.log"

It looks like ComboFix removed some legit items you need. Do you recognize and use all of the below

Are you still having malware problems?

I will reinstall the SuperAnti-Spyware and attach a log but as far as I can tell the only thing ComboFix removed that I need is Hotspot Shield, but friends tell me it has viruses in it.
And I was never having malware problems its that I thought that my Internet was slow because I had malware but maybe its just the Internet itself that`s slow?

As far as I know, HotSpot Shield is legit. But it is also possible that the added layer of protection that it is adding around your TrendMicro software is slowing down your browsing. You should try uninstalling HotSpot Shield and see what happens.

What is the below software for?

    Gestionnaire Antidote.exe

Sorry for my absence, Antidote is a program which helps correct french mistakes, its a french dictionnary/corrector.

Thanks for the info on that program. Did you try my suggestion yet to see what happens?

No I did not try uninstalling Hotspot Shield but I think I have found the solution/problem. I play a game called Vindictus made by Nexon, they also make Maplestory. When installing the game or when the game updates they use a p2p system called PMB.exe. (I believe it stands for Pando Media Booster) I found that when I terminated PMB.exe my ping and bandwith in games was better. Therefore I don't think I had malware hogging my bandwith but I think it was PMB.exe that was doing so instead.

    Thanks.

Also how do I re-enable UAC?

    Thanks. Sorry for double-post.

Before enabling UAC, let's first use ComboFix to DeQuarantine the HotSpot Shield file it removed.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named C:\DeQuarantine_log.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If he DeQuarantine was successful, then move on to the below.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
