Hi, my XP machine has picked up the version of the Interpol virus that won't allow you to run Windows in Safe Mode.

I've read through a few threads about recovering from the Interpol virus on Windows 7 but I was just wondering what to do if I'm running XP - as the 'Repair Your Computer' option is not available on XP's Advanced Boot Options menu.

I'm in the final stages of transferring a bunch of important files across to my Mac before wiping XP and re-building that laptop for the kids with Windows 8...but the transfer hasn't been completed yet and the software I'm working with is incompatible with Windows 8 - so I really need to get XP back up and running for another month. Can anyone help?!

Hi, sorry for the long period of silence - I couldn't get Kaspersky USB Maker to work (tried a couple of different machines) and then my DVD burner died and I had to order a new one.

When I finally got the CD burned and tried to boot from it, I was stopped from booting to the Kaspersky Rescue Disk page / menu. The computer would attempt to boot from the CD, then somehow the virus automatically forced it to bypass the Kaspersky rescue disk and go straight to the Safe Boot page.

The virus forces all of the Safe Boot options into an automatic reboot. All roads lead to a standard boot and an Interpol page lockdown.

Do you have any suggestions? Or do you think I am left with the need to do a clean install?

No good :( The machine is an Acer Travelmate 4720 - about 7 or 8 years old and it wouldn't recognise the USB. Surfright recommended creating a Sidekick boot CD, but it had the same outcome as the Kaspersky boot disc - bypassed by the virus and forced the machine into a standard Windows boot. Thanks for your help on this...are there any other options you could suggest?

Try following the instructions given here for using the Microsoft Safety Scanner and the Windows Defender offline. Let me know how you get on.

Or... you can try the tool from Bitdefender.

Thanks for the ideas...do you think it's still worth trying Windows Defender if it relies on a CD drive boot...which hasn't worked with Kaspersky or Sidekick? Every time I've tried a CD boot, the malware blocks it and forces the machine into a normal Windows boot.

I can't see Microsoft Safety Scanner working as it requires me to first boot into Safe Mode, which is also blocked by the malware - all I get is a screen full of variations on 'multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\avgidishx.sys

....The text after: "Drivers\" changes on each line.

In a similar way, I can't see Bitdefender working as it relies on booting to Safe Mode with Networking - which produces exactly the same result as Safe Mode - a screen full of identical text / drivers, then stalls and requires a power-off reboot to get any other result at all.

I'm happy to try Windows Defender once I get access to a Windows machine to create the boot CD at work tomorrow, or is going to be futile?

    Yes let's give it a try. :)

Is system restore an option also?
