Wow. We really need a LOT more information my friend. What computer specs? What programs are you using to connect with, etc.

    Most common problem:
Right click tray time> "Adjust..."> Update.
    While here, tick 'Automatic synchronize...'

    Another situation:
    "On board" certificates not current.
Vista/Win7: Go to your "Windows update" in IE8

For XP: IE8> Security > Windows Update.
When @ Microsoft Updates, click the 'Custom' button, not the 'Express'.
This will give you hardware & software updates specific to your unit (hence the necessity to allow the 'Active X'). Includes specific drivers & "Root Certificates".
["Express" and "Automatic Updates" only gives Windows operating system updates]

major- thanks for the comment. i am not a computer whiz- just an average joe.
i'm using current foxfire and/or IE. i understand that there can be an 'easy fix' on my machine (win7 with plenty of RAM etc and cable connection). i've tried adjusting the security settings on my browsers (options- advanced), but to no avail. also tinkered with the properties of mstsc, but likewise no results.
any suggestions greatly appreciated. jim (bluemeteor- the nickname for the passenger pigeon- now extinct)

Does it do this with all browsers? Might see if it duplicates in Chrome so we know it is a browser specific issue. What version of Firefox? If its a beta, that can be a problem.

foxfire is the most recent version.
i have not tried chrome or opera, but certainly can.
    thanks jim

Is the date and time on your system clock correct? (probably is but worth a look)

Another reason for the invalid certificate: Unsigned Certificate
MS: If a trusted certification authority did not sign the security certificate, you can manually add the authority.
    1. Click the Certificate Error button in the Internet Explorer address bar of the Certificate Error page.
    2. Click View Details.
    3. Select the root certificate in the Certification Path tab, and then click View Certificate.
    4. Click Install Certificate in the General tab.

Next: Once your cert is installed, if you still have problems, select it and then click the advanced button. You'll see a list of permissions for that cert. Look over that list and see if any permission (especially one pertaining to your purpose) is unchecked.

thanks- i'll try your suggestion. i installed chrome- great browser, but still came up with the same error message. it said my computer doesnot recognize the validity of the certificate, so this must be an issue pertaining to my computer. jim

did as suggested- ->view certificate->got dialog box, 3 tabs- general, details, certification path. general said->'windows doesnot have enoughinformation to verify this certificate' issued to 'mail.xxx.com'; valid from4/15/11 to 4/14/13.
under certificate path->it listed 'mail.xxx.com'. the view certificate button was greyed out. certificate status box->' the issuer of this certificate could not be found'
interesting- i can access my email, but not my (work) computer so i could not get to the files.
    any hepl appreciated.
    jim
