Invalid sync

My OS is Win XP Pro. Recently I have a shutdown problem. The computer hangs at "Windows is Shutting Down". The mouse becomes inoperable. I need to push and hold the CPU shutoff button to close down. After the blue screen goes away I then get a message "Invalid sync" in large letters on a gray background. I have cleaned my computer with Panda, PC Repair and RegCure. Please advise what I should try next.

My friend experienced the same problem and it was due to the
drivers for his ethernet card not being installed correctly.
Reinstalled them and all was ok.

If thats not your problem you could go to your Task Manager using End Task on different running programs just before shutting down. This might tell you which program is having problems shutting itself down.

try that and see what happens....let me know

Your solution allowed me to shut down and eliminated the invalid sync message but I found other problems. Some may be a result of my IRS being unplugged without my knowledge. anyway I have lost my e-mail and can't reinstall Eudora using Win Xp pro getting this error
error(-5009:0x80040154) ha occurred during setup.
The computer will not boot from the Cd ROM after changing the CMOS. It boots into Windows same as always.
