I am having a problem with Sys Mechanic not wanting to run and came across the following response from Major Geek DLB :

I searched the Knowledge Base at the Iolo web site (they make System Mechanic) and found nothing even slightly similar to or related to anything called "capicom.dll". I even searched for "cap" and found nothing. Personally, I think System Mechanic is not all that great, and have never seen it actually fix anything or make a computer run better, and there are free programs that do the same basic thing. However, as a non-System Mechanic user, and a non-fan, all I can suggest is to either contact Iolo support with a support ticket (use this link), download the DLL file from this link (use the link at the bottom of the "Free Download" box; you'll have to scroll down a bit to see it; after downloading, use the info at this link to get the DLL registered and functional with Windows), or simply remove System Mechanic. Yeah - not the best fixes, but I'm not sure there's much else you can do. If you have the capicom.dll file already on the PC (use the Windows search feature to find it, or look in C:\Windows\System32), re-register it by using the steps listed at this link (this same link I already posted above) - OR - uninstall and re-install System Mechanic.... good luck! I hope this helps!

I know this doesn't answer my problem; but I am interested in DLB's response about his/her response of not liking Sys Mech and mentioning there are better "free" choices. I would like to know what those choices are.
    Thanks.

Here's one possibility, and here's another. They're both freeware. :)

With System Mechanic only having a rating of 2.56 out of a possible 5 here at Major Geeks(only 55 votes out of 175946 downloads), it seems dlb isn't the only one that has a low opinion of the utility.

Where as utilities like Tweaking.com - Windows Repair with a rating of 4.37(290 votes with 473777 downloads) and Nick T's suggestion of Advanced SystemCare having a rating of 4.59(7656 votes and 3170897 downloads), fair a little better.

I'm not an advocate of the "one click fix/tune all" type of utilities although they have their uses if that "ONE CLICK OPTION" isn't used blindly, and while I certainly can't speak for dlb nor ever presume to do so, I don't think he is an advocate either.

Do not use Iolo System Mechanic it will do more harm then good i used it for a while and it sucks.

For one they want to charge a crap load of cash for a program that does more harm. They use to charge over 80$ for it now its down to 50$ for a few months and that does not last long.

The thing that i find that is the worst part on the program is that it will cause more harm.

It will slow down your system more then speed it up.

Go with Advanced SystemCare 6 have not had an issue since i been using there first beta.http://www.majorgeeks.com/Advanced_SystemCare_3_d5927.html

I have used lots of programs and tested on lots of OS and i find that ASC is really good.
