I received an Iomega 80Gig external HD for Christmas and would appreciate any help the "geeks" can give me regarding using it. It has Iomega "automatic backup software"--what files should I set up to auto backup? Also, has Symantec Norton Ghost--Is this a good program and will it completely backup my entire HD in case the HD fails? In the auto backup mode, will the program slow down my computer (1 yr old Sony 3.2 Hz Multi Media with XP)? Thanks.

I also use Iomega Backup. I only back up the My Documents folder and Favorites. If you store documents anywhere else, be sure to include that directory as well. There's no point in backing up programs, since you can easily re-install them.

Norton Ghost is good also. It takes an "image" of your hard drive, every program, file and settings. There are some compression settings, but it doen't compress too much.

The cool thing about the Iomega Backup is that you can back up to any drive. I have an additional internal HD that I use for back ups. I have it set to back up each and every time a file is created or altered.

The worst thing you can do is to NOT back up!

Norton ghost is great when it comes to taking a backup of a smaller partition. I've used it to make a backup of the C-drive after formatting and reinstalling of OS and all programs that I know I will always use, and with all the settings that I want. That way, when I screw something up, instead of reinstallin, which takes at least a day with all programs and settings, I can get this image back in half an hour!

You store the backup image on another partition, so as evilevets said, it might not be the best thing to use for backing up that big external drive.

Try it for your system drive though, very nice program, with a nice interface! :)
