IP addy not found!

    I'm trying help a friend with an older Dell computer. He's running XP SP-2 with a 3Com 3C920 integrated network adapter through a cable modem. When he tries to connect it either doesn't connect at all or has a (very) limited connection. His IP address is also not found. It is 00.00.000.00 across the board. I'm going to try and download some drivers for him and put them on a disc, but any other additional ideas would be great.

    Ask him to go into the command prompt and ping 127.1.1.1
