    Hi,

I would like to know if there is anyone out there that knows much about IP addresses. What I would like to know firstly, if I have an ADSL connection, do I have an IP address. Secondly, can my IP address be seen by websites (in their data) that I visit. I would like to understand more about this.

If anyone has info regarding this, I would be more than greateful

    Cheers confused

It doe not matter what type of connection you have, without IP there is No Internet.

So yes you have an IP, and yes any site that you go to sees your IP.

However your IP belongs to your Internet service provider, and your identity can not be given to others by your provider unless you do something illegal and the court order the provider to disclose you Id.

P.S. The above applies to the USA, YMMV Down Under.

Yes....in simple terms, your IP address is your computers unique address and is used to identify, and communicate with other devices over the network (internet). It will look something like, 192.168.1.125

Every device used to access the internet has its own unique address for this reason, just as your house has a street address (so they know where to send your mail) When a friend sends you an email, ever wondered how it finds its way accross the vast internetwork, right to your computer?

Your broadband modem is also a network device and also has its own IP addy for identification and communication purposes.

You can see that 'blocking' this address is most unwise, but you can translate it, or manually assign it which is another book altogether!

To find your computers assigned IP addy, (for XP) click start>run> type in command and click ok. In the command DOS that appears, type ipconfig and hit enter.....

    Regards ;)

Also many people claim that "proxy servers" offer protection, but really not that much. Its very little if any thing gained from using a proxy server. So i wouldn't even mess with a proxy server, as its usually more trouble then its worth.
