I have attached a screen shot below. The PC in question is running XP Home SP2. I can surf the web, but antispyware/antivirus apps will not download and install updates. I have performed a Winsock/TCP-IP repair and it made no difference. The wifi seems to connect and disconnect at random, and it will sometimes surf even though the wifi status reports that 'No wireless networks are available'. Yes, there was a fairly pervasive malware problem which has been taken care of (for the most part). I'm now trying to correct and repair the damage caused by the malware. But the infections have been successfully removed (I'm pretty good at removing malware ;) ).
