Not sure exactly what model, but my boss is offering to sell me his IPhone 4.something, he is upgrading to a 4.higher? Seems like a no brainer to me, my phone does text, pictures and phone calls. The phone is unlocked.

Any reason not to get this phone? Thank for any info.

Sounds like a good deal, even if it's just an 8 GB. I've had my iPhone 4 16GB for three years or so and have had few issues with it. It's rarely been turned off in that time.

One thing to check is button operation. The iPhone 4 did have a problem with the top button failing. Mine has gotten to the point where I have to push it harder . . . but it's a minor inconvenience. All the top button functions can be used with an on-screen accessibility feature.

I've been very happy with the phone. I bought a new OEM battery from China for $5.00US and it even came with tools to change it. Not gotten around to doing that yet, as my original battery is still not too bad . . . but the switch over looks like a pretty straightforward process. Battery life is the only other thing that should be checked on a used iPhone that I'm aware of.

Thanks for the info. This guy uses his phone all freaking day long, so I think the battery is good. I would like a Black Phone, but don't have $629 laying around for a cell phone upgrade.

Does the Iphone have better reception? My current phone, I have to go outside most times to make a call. I might stay with my current provider (I think $35 per month unlimited text, talk, data, no contract) or will consider Verizon.

Seems like a great deal, the phones at my provider are $100 plus, and I suspect much less than a slightly outdated IPhone.

Hey Fred, grab a bright torch and look up inside the headphone socket and also up the dock connection. You are looking to see if the water sensors have been activated. If you can see white inside the holes then they are not activated but if you see red they have been activated and the phone has been wet. If either of these are red then there is another sensor to check inside the phone on the static shield but you need special tools to check this one.
If it has been wet then could mean future problems but otherwise if the phone is working then go for it and $75 is OK too ;)

Will check that out, thanks. Like I said, it is my boss selling it, so pretty sure it is in good shape.

Apple is dropping support for the iPhone 4. Another thing to consider.

Interesting. What would this entail? Like I said, current phone is only semi literate. No interweb, really crappy reception...

I am not looking for top of the line.

Can't speak to most other types of phones, but I work in what is essentially a big pile of concrete and steel. Transistor radios and such equipment cannot get any signal at all, but my iPhone always gets one or two bars, often more. The phone I had prior to the iPhone was a "dumb" phone, and it couldn't get a signal at all.

I have had occasion to interact with major cell phone providers, and I was once told that iPhones were notorious for rendering GPS coordinates with a wide radius . . . but that's just what one person I dealt with told me. This is just hearsay, and from what I have observed the claim doesn't translate into not being able to make or receive a call from dim zones, or the accuracy of GPS data the phone provides the user. I kinda don't give a darn if someone else can't pinpoint where my phone is . . . :-D

I did not know that. Good to know. Thank you for the info :)

I have an iphone 4 sitting in my cabinet that I use for backup and it's still working fine (but I haven't used mine in 2 years). I got it 3 years before that. How long has your boss used it for? These things do have a shelf life and the battery does wear out.

Also, as joffa said, be sure to check all the holes. Apple put moisture sensors in all of them (bs if you ask me, because as my daughter has proven, steam from the shower can set them off).

Are you set on unlocked? If you aren't, you can get a 4S for free from Verizon (since you said you were considering them).

I remember you talking about your reception a while back. That's most likely a function of your provider (or interference in your house). We all have Verizon. The signal isn't great inside, but we can use the phones. My cousin was just staying here. They have AT&T. They had to go outside.

He has had the phone for maybe a year. Don't the free phones require a contract? I was thinking about the Page Plus $29.99 a month one. I rarely use more than 500 minutes, so that is plenty of phone, not sure how far 500 MB data goes, but can always bump up the plan if needed.

https://www.pagepluscellular.com/ This is what my boss has on the phone, and he says coverage is great. Looks like the battery is replaceable if needed later on.

    Thanks for the info. :cool

It means no more updates, like with Windows XP.

Well, for $75, I am not going high end. :-D Think I am going to buy it.

I really want a phone I don't have to go outside to make a call at my house, have text, good camera, and the ability to check email, or maybe hit a GPS or Google search all along.

I like the Black Phone, but don't see me spending $600 for a phone.

Are updates that important to an IPhone? Asking cause I know almost nothing about them.

OK, got the phone, I can actually make calls inside my house! Woots! Keyboard takes some getting used to. Why no period or punctuation on main screen... Oh well, like it overall, is a bit of a learning curve. Not syncing up with my computer, but will play around, and if I don't figure it out, will post in the Phone software section.

    Thanks for the input. :cool

Glad you like the phone. I've been very happy with mine.

I had an issue getting mine to sync with my computer. I was running XP at the time, and my desktop would have issues with the iTunes software. Ended up using an Acer laptop I have with Windows 7 and it worked perfectly. Still does.

That is the one problem with the iPhone I forgot about, as I don't back my phone up all that much (I should, I know) is I don't like the software you have to use to back it up, but it's a minor issue.

My XP desktop does not really like the iPhone. I also have an Acer laptop. May see how that works. Loving the iPhone.

Well, you do get what you pay for.

Not being locked into Apple, or a specific carrier is worth a lot.

It sounds like in your later post you downloaded itunes. I'm pretty sure you need to have it on your computer for you iphone. I had issues with mine syncing to my Outlook when I had one (switched to a Windows phone since then), but finally got it working with some finagling. Other than that, you should be able to have it work with a windows computer.

Yes, got the itunes thing. But I deleted/disabled a lot of services on this computer to get my game on. :-D I know I disabled the Bonjour thingy, think the itunes uses that. Will figure it out one day.
