iphone bypass activation.

I just lost my iphone 5 recently and I still put Find my iphone on that, so it's still somewhere and be off. I guess who stole it hasn't figure out how to bypass the lock yet. It means I still have chance to recover my phone.

However, is there any ways that the lock can be bypassed without formatting data? How easy would it be? I tried that on my friend's phone and obviously it doesn't work. But methods are floating on the internet and I don't know if anyone really succeeded?
