IPOD help

I was wondering if there is a way to put your music from your i pod back onto a computer. I know the way to port music but it involves a process of putting the music into a certain folder and then putting them onto the ipod while the songs are still on the hard drive. My comp crashed and we had to reformat it and i wasn't able to put all my music in that specific folder so it's not letting me move my music from my ipod back to my comp. If anyone has a way around this please let me know. It would be much appreciated.
