OK so here's the deal - 4th gen ipod has come to the end of it's life, turn it on and get the dead ipod image come up. I ran through the returns policy on the Apple website, and as it's out of warranty, they want a charge of £166. They didn't say what I'd get back so wonder if any of you know what I'd get for this amount.

    Any thoughts???

Are you sure it's dead? Enter the Diagnostic mode and run the disk checker.

OK sorry, I currently have the 4th gen ipod, click wheel, no colour screen (this was before they bought out the colour one).
They want £166 for a replacement, they didn't say what the replacement would be, they only offer the video one for £220 now and the Nanos.
I'm unsure what I'd get for a replacement though, just wondered what you lot thought of it all.

And yeh Steve it's gone, nothing at all :(

Call them and ask what exactly they plan to replace it with. You will be in a better position to make an informed decision then :)

I don't know which number to call, the sales one???
The tech. support is charged at £35 per call so.... :p

  7. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

Yeah...definately the sales one in that case ;) Or you could reverse charges :p

I read an article in today`s local fish-wrap that said that Apple was slashing ipod prices across the board, and that many of the imitators wouldn`t be able to compete, ergo forcing them out of that particular field. Is that an option for you? A new one at a lower cost than posssible repair?

  9. mcadam

    mcadam Major Amnesia

Well, I just got off the phone to them, called the tech. support line and got a free call, as we have free calls hehe, and she recommended buying a video one as a replacement would cost £169 and I'd get an old style one with no colour. For £219 I can get a video one that hold's 30gb so it seems the right decision for an extra £60 :)

  10. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

Wow...that's about $400. They retail at $300 in the US. Ask them if you can have a US one then you will save the 60 quid too lol

The video iPODS are quite impressive, I doubt you would be upset with it. Though I really wish they had a cordless syncing option like bluetooth etc....

  12. mcadam

    mcadam Major Amnesia

Lev maybe I could give you money so you could buy it for me????

And yeh that would be pretty good. I still think that they should have an option to sync with other ipods......copyright for songs though obviously prevents this.

    Sorry, I don't get it.

I can understand listening to music, but what's with video?

Who wants to look at a 2 inch screen?

Anyway, make sure you check what you are getting, as Apple are renowned for giving people refurbished iPods when they expected new ones, as well as charging outrageous amounts.

whre can I translate different kinds of money? I hate it when people post like 50%^4* I have no idea how much $ that is. but I would go with a new ipod, color screen and they are a lot thinner, tehy have made some major improvements since the first ipod.

    I agree!

Off topic, but related to this post. I don't understand people watching movies on their computer! Unless, it is HTPC outputed to their TV.

nanos are a better buy than the Shuffle.

For less than 100 more (in my case), you can get 4 times the space.

Personally, I can't get over how society has become SO OBSESSED with having to hear their music every spare moment of time!!!! Especially the kids these kids where I live!!!! My favorite one is a couple of friends walking through the mall sharing the IPOD phones. Can't people talk to one another now?? Me personally...if I have down time...I use my mind to entertain me!!!!

Anyway...getting off the beaten path here...and not meaning to lash out at you, mcadam...I just don't understand it!?!?

Have you tried looking on EBAY and see if you can find a good deal from someone who has mega-mongo good feedback??!!

Hope you get it straightened out!!

Have you seen one with video yet? It is quite impressive at two inches and you can convert your DVDs to a higher res than the purchased ones from iTUNES and output them from the ipod to a TV to watch anywhere, granted you lose the DVD quality but it is TV quality which is fine for certain shows.

  23. mcadam

    mcadam Major Amnesia

Yeh the quality is actually pretty good.

www.xe.com is great for conversions. Lev when the time comes, I'll probably send you a Paypal payment or something. I just need to start saving..........

That link has expired too, but I'd probably get a white 30gb one, everyone has the black one here, want to be original and different ;)

    Cheers too :)

Wow they're $299 on there, which comes out to just over £170!

Bargain, I'll pay you a bit extra for shipping and for your help :)
How much you reckon it would cost to ship here? £20?

  26. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

That's what I said in my earlier post. You will save the extra 60 quid they want to charge you and still get the video version :)

I will find out how much it costs to ship. I don't want anything for doing it...that's what friends are for :) It really is no big deal to arrange.

    I just had a thought....and yes, it hurt :p

McA....something to consider. How do you recharge the batteries on the iPod? I've never used one, but a co-worker who has one tells me she simply plugs in to her mac. I think there is a similar feature/cable for non-mac users, and she also has a 12v cigarette lighter charger in her car. The reason I ask is the US is on 110V system and the UK 240V. If recharging is directly through the mains it isn't going to work unless the iPod has an auto-switch feature inbuilt (as my cell phone does). I'm guessing as the car charger is 12v though it is a trickle charge and it will be fine, but you might like to just check this out first.

It's still a 2 inch screen, there's no getting around that, regardless of how impressive it is.

I have seen them, and yes they are impressive, but only because of the technology.

I still wouldn't want to sit there watching videos or stills on a tiny screen.

Apart from the novelty aspect and bragging rights, I don't see the point.

  30. mcadam

I have a UK mains 240v power adaptor and usb and firewire lead from my original ipod box, so surely that should work???

These 3 cables charge it fine so I imagine all being well, unless US pcs are different to UKs :p

  31. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

Well they are..they run on 110v. As will the iPod. You plug it into 240v and it will blow.

I have never been able to get my head around electricity...maybe someone else here can advise on this one?

  32. Insomniac

Insomniac Billy Ray Cyrus #1 Fan

Does the adaptor tell you what it converts the mains to (the output)?

If the US and UK adaptors outputs are the same, then it should work.

Regardless, I would contact Apple and double-check beforehand.

  33. mcadam

    mcadam Major Amnesia

There's definitely a transformer on the plug charger itself otherwise it wouldn't be such a big plug!
You couldn't put 240v through an ipod anyway because it would blow.
It also says on it Input - 240V then Output - 12V.

    I think this is ok.

  34. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

Yeah, that's what I thought...12v if it runs off a car charger too. Cars are 12v in both countries, so makes sense the output regardless of the method used is 12v. Should be fine. Just use the one you have, not the one that will come with it, as this will be set to input at 110v.

Nowadays I only by stuff that can receive both 110 or 240 so I can travel it between both countries with no problems. Trust the UK to be different....again!

  35. mcadam

    mcadam Major Amnesia

US plugs don't fit in UK sockets either :p

    I currently have £109!!!! :D:D

  36. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

Well spotted!! I found that too. I found a great website that sold converting plugs for US to UK...they were only about a fiver each too. I have my UK monitor, printer and computer all running off a extension bar into a converter plug :) Or you can just get one of those European converter multi travel plugs.

Keep saving...not far to go already :D

Yuhuh not far now! Working tomorrow night, should be another £25 or so, need £190 or so including delivery is that right?

  38. Phantom

    Phantom Brigadier Britches

Ya can by a 12v transformer just locally, McA. The only other thing to watch is the polarity (usually +12v is the cetre contact, but not always). And sufficient mA current, of course. ;)

  39. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

I think so...$299 comes to 171.277 UK pounds. Postage will be $10-$17, depending on preference. The link below takes you to the USPS website. It appears insurance with the Options 6 and 8 (these are your choices) is included free, although there is optional extra insurance if you want it for just under 5 bucks (2 pounds roughly). I;ve read it and personally don't understand the difference between the 2 insurances.

    http://ircalc.usps.gov/intl_speed.asp?CID=10150&MailType=package&Pounds=1&Ounces=0

There are also other options to consider. As your goods value is over the Customs and Excise free limit (which is really low..like 35 quid, even for gifts!) you may attract customs charges as it comes in to the UK. You can obviously declare the goods are worth only 35 quid, which being second hand (as I had them first :p) would not be inappropriate, BUT, if anything happened to the parcel (loss, damage etc) you would only get 35 quid back on the insurance. (possible moral ethics issue)

Alternative options: How patient are you? hehe. My sons are coming out at the end of March...returning mid April. I can have them bring it back for you, and then they just drop it in the UK mail to your house.

Whatever you prefer McA...I'm happy to help. Let me know :)

Lol engraving might make it take longer, if you want to surprise me though! Remember this is going to be mine for the next year or 2 though!!

Definitely white, everyone has the black one and I'm original and proud to be white :) Wait.....not in the racist sense!
Oh and the 30gb one too :)

Delivery option 6 would seem the best I think. What about Fedex? I have a friend who ordered something from the states, with Fedex for $10 it came within 2 days.

Lev I'm just over the £200 mark, customs import charges are rocketing at over £30 for any good coming in from the states, plus delivery so I think I may as well just get it here, I'm going up to Regent Street tomorrow with people so might be able to get it there.

You've been great in researching help and that so thanks a lot anyway :)
