Is A 2tb Any Better Than A 1tb Hard Drive?

Hello, I have been away for some time doing all kinds of things college. My last computer, which is the same model as what I am working with now (Dell Latitude e641o), was attacked by ransomware about a year or so ago. It may be longer now, but regardless of this fact, I was wondering what the difference between a 2TB and a 1TB hard drive meant for my old latitude? I am wanting to get this older laptop running again so I can use it in my college classes. The older unit has a 2.4 GHz Intel Core M580 i5 and the newer one is an Intel Core i7 2.8 GHz. Along with 8MB RAM. Had also thought about upgrading the Intel processor. It may have gotten hot during my house fire in March of last year. The white has seeped out from under the bracket in the center of the unit, plus there is a funny odor when you take the back off. It almost smells like melted wax.

I have found both hard drives for my older latitude, but not sure what all is needed to make it work right in my unit. Can I please get your expert advice on this area? I would appreciate any help I can get.

The one I am currently using now is being used to entertain children with Autism. I have a Netflix account and this unit is connected to the flat screen for the kids to watch their movies on.

Thank you all in advance of taking the time to read this and respond.

    Cindy

In the first instance, does your old laptop boot to desktop?

Personally, I am finding it difficult to understand exactly your goal and objective. Yes I understand that you want to get the laptop going again but I am failing to grasp the relevance of the 1Tb --> 2Tb

Of course this does not sound good and prior to spending any money on this this matter it would have to be investigated ie laptop may have to be completely dismantled. Unless you can do this yourself would cost money.

As a general pointer, the order in which I would speed up an old laptop is 1. Install SSD, 2. Increase ram if not enough and 3. Upgrade cpu

Best bang for buck is the SSD

Without knowing the specific model numbers of each drive, the only difference is the amount of storage space for your files. There is nothing to suggest the 2TB drive will perform better or last longer.

Before you spend any $$$ on anything for that laptop, open it up and see if it looks okay. If it is damaged, there isn't much point in spending money to fix a laptop from 2015.

Good point. But if no other damage, if me and I had to replace the drive, I would go for an SSD.

How are these 2 statements related? Did you change drives before? Do want data off both drives on a new larger drive?

Have you spied out a 1 or 2 tb drive that fits in your laptop?

A new laptop with a larger drive would allow room for any personal data and content off your older drives to be moved over.

This is true. But if the older, smaller drive still has lots of free space on it, buying a larger drive may just be a waste of space and money.

But that still doesn't cover what's to be done with -2- older drives.

That's an unrelated issue, really. Clearly, we need some more input from the OP.
