all these companies r buying eachother out right now i dont know where to begin....Ati buys out amd, then nvidia buys ati so they own ati and amd.Lol wow this isnt what im trying to talk bout, meaning is dual that good?

i read that and was told dual core is useless right now,but someone told me that 1 gpu on the duo is better than any of the 42-4800x2.but its only 2.13 ghz and my 3500 amd is 2.4 ghz.

the point of this thread is vista is coming and built to run 32 gbs of ram,64 bit processors,dual/quad cores.what im afraid is r the now games no good for dual cores?

    The ghz wars are over.

The core 2 duo (which is what ye need to get) overpowers a lot of the single core cpus. Even from amd.

Gaming on the other hand, there isn't much of a benefit.

On a side note, you can use this chart to help ye decide what ye want:

Yeah, I'm not an extreme oc'er, so, probably settle for the e6600. My new build config always morphs, so who knows what I'll be buying. :)

Actually, it was AMD (The processor company) that acquired ATI (Former graphics card and chipset company). nVidia, hasn't acquired ATI or AMD either.

To address your question, dual core is far from useless. While it is true that most software is not written to take full advantage of the dual cores yet, the dual core processors still outperform the single core processors. When you are running multiple applications at once, dual core processors outperform the single cores by an even wider margin.

As far as gaming is concerned, the performance advantage of dual core over single core processors is minimal, but expect dual core CPU's to take a much wider lead when games are coded multi-threaded and utilize the full power of the dual cores.

With the newest generation of processors, core speed (Ghz), is not the only thing to take into account and doesn't accurately portray how fast a processor actually is. For example an Intel Core 2 Duo processor running at 2.0Ghz is much faster than a AMD64 3700+ running at 2.2Ghz. The AMD processor is clocked faster, but the Intel processor is architecturally different and uses other methods than raw speed to achieve high performance.

With Vista just around the corner, and if you want to upgrade your computer, a Core 2 Duo processor would be the best way to go. The Core 2 Duo's support 64bit code so you will be able to run both x64 and x84 versions of vista and software with no problems. And just because you have a new processor does not mean that your games will not work or run. :)

x86 is your standard 32-bit AFAIK, and I have absolutely no idea why they say "x86" and "x64" (well, the latter is obvious).
