Is it a virus???

Within the last week, my computer developed 2 problems:

    1. My audio disappeared and was replaced with the default beep sound from the CPU. Device manager shows no problems. Windows sound troubleshooter was, as always, useless.

    2. I have a game (Mahjongg ) that I have played every day for about a year, and when I clicked it's icon to play, I got a Microsoft error report box (send/don't send ) and the game will not open. I have the CD, so I uninstalled then reinstalled to no avail; I can't even play the game from the CD.

I have run various virus scans and the first scan found 2 viruses and removed them, but I still have these problems which may have occurred
    at the same time.

    Would greatly appreciate any help!!!

    Hi

As you mentioned your scans had found malware, its best to fully get your PC checked out as not all scanner can locate all malware and their could be some components of the malware left on the PC that are causing this, so.....

Please read and follow the following READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide and once finished please start a new thread in the Malware Forum plus a guide on how to attach the logs HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post

As an alternate you could do a system restore back to a point when your PC was working ok as its only a week ago since this happened, but you will loose any new installed applications, updates etc

What Windows version and Service Pack you using?

But in the end the advice I posted on getting the malware checked out on our malware forum first is best option, to start with, then if the malware experts give you an all clear then we can re-visit this in this thread and try other things, but best to rule out malware first.

I tried to do a system restore, but the only available restore point was from that day! I am running WinXP SP3.
I have run all the spyware removal programs that I have to no avail.
I am not clear about your reply; do you want me to move this post to Malware forum?

    Hi

No, Leave this actual thread here for when the malware experts say you are clear of malware, then we can continue in the knowledge that you are malware free, so to rule out malware follow the below

But do start a new thread in Malware forum once you have followed the guide quoted above and attach the logs requested.

I do have one of the malware programs (MyWay search asst) listed under add/remove programs, but there is no button to delete it.
I searched my computer for my*.* and found nothing. Any advice?
    Still working on scans.

Then run through the guide that HALO posted and start a thread in the malware forum and let a malware fighter assist you in the removal. :wave:wave

I now think that my problem is not malware, but hardware. I mentioned that I am getting no system sounds. When I go to Ctl Panel, sounds & audio device, on the volume tab I have listed "no audio device", and all boxes on most of the tabs are greyed out and the Hardware tab lists my audio card and reports it to be working properly, as does Device Manager. I have uninstalled it from Device Manger, rebooted, Windows finds new hardware but still nothing.
The game that I could not open requires a sound card, so perhaps this is the problem with the game.
