Is It Possible To 'tag' Non Jpg Pics On Windows 7?

Lately I've been making use of image tagging which is really easy on Win7. Now all I've gotta do to find all my family photo's is just type "family", or holiday in Greece, I just type "Skiathos", even if the pic's actually called "DCIM1037598432675093246". Great feature, BUT for some reason, I can only tag JPG/JPEG's. JPG's are nothing special AFAIK, and nothing new, so that begs the question: Why can I only tag JPG's? What about PNG, BMP, Gif & WEBP etc?

Do I have to install some kind of plugin or software to do this or is it a no-go? I'd love some info on this because I've indexed so many pics now, its such a handy feature. I googled this a while back but IIRC, nothing really came up. I guess its one of those "grey areas"?

    Thanks!

Have you considered converting the pictures to jpg so you can tag them?
You can archive the originals on a data CD so they are safe then convert the files on the computer to jpg and add your tags.
