Hi, I downloaded the Microsoft Essential Virus protector, it says I have a virus on my CD drive, and that I should format the Drive, is it safe to do so?

Greetings, kiminator, and welcome to Majorgeeks...

This "Microsoft Essential Virus protector" - where did you get it? Is it the same program as this one?

Also - is there a CD or DVD in your optical drive? If so, when you take the disk out do you receive the same message?

Hi yes it is the same one, there is no cd or dvd in the drive at present and it gives me that message. Actually even though it says the drive needs to be formated it doesn't let you do it.

I seem to have some issues with the computer, and may just have to format it. :(

    Thanks though

    Good morning...

There are actual viruses that might affect firmware, called "rootkits". If you feel that MSE is indeed picking up rootkit-like symptoms, then a trip through the Malware Removal Forum's Read & Run Me First thread might be in order - let the gurus there take a look at your logs.

    Thanks, I will do that.
