After having problems a couple of weeks back with spyware and adware I came to the forums and received excellent advice from chaslang and the major. I read the tutorials on here and since then have had no problems at all with my computer. To be safe I have been keeping to a routine, every 3-4 days I unplug my internet connection, turn off system restore, and run all my virus/spy programs one by one. Then I run CCleaner and EasyCleaner to make sure everythings cleaned up nicely and theres no unwanted crap about. Last night I did this and Ashampoo AntiSpyware came up with 12 problems, much to my surprise Limewire was the culprit! I let the software remove it from my compuer, then Asquared told me I had 38 problems! Limewire again! I also let these be removed from my computer.

Why after being on my computer for 2 months is Limewire suddenly a threat? Almost everyone I know uses this program! Please could anyone tell me why it is suddenly been classed as a problem? Also why hasnt Defender or AVG got problems with it?

Limewire has gone back and forth between being truly a malware bundler and not. Current versions are supposedly not bundled with malware like older versions. However things change all the time. Most malware scanning programs will flag ALL p2p and torrent type download programs as potential problems. You need to read how they write the problems description. Sometime they are warnings. Sometimes they come right out and say it is a malware problem that MUST be fixed.

The truth in general is that all P2P programs can be dangerous even when they are not bundled with malware. That is why the are frequently flagged.

Just like the P2P programs can change over a period of time, so do scanners. At each update of definitions/detections there are changes which could change what it being flagged as a problem.

Windows Defender is not a very useful program to compare anything to? It misses lots of problems.

When you say AVG, due you mean AVG Antivirus or AVG Antispyware?

Thanks for the reply. I was just concerned about the program being on my system for so long without any problems then suddenly everything had a problem with it.

I was talking about AVG AntiVirus Free Edition in my previous post.

Okay then my answer is that normally antivirus programs focus primarily on things that are a virus, a trojan... etc. Thus they do not normally detect various items that may or may not be problems like P2P or remote access programs (things like WinVNC or similar). In fact this is the reason there are antivirus tools and separate antispyware tools.
