Borderline is about right.....but it will run it!

For optimal functionality, 1gig of DDR 400 (pc-3200) at a minimum.

Just so you know for next time, not a good idea to mention any illegal software around these parts!
MG's doesn't support it, and probably the main reason no one has answered to your thread.
Get yourself a legit version of Vista, and you will never look back! ;)

    Good Luck!

The question is academic - you will not pass the wga.
XPis only around £50 now- thats your route.

Explain the 'academic' part and the 'wga' part.

You can run vista basic but it will run like crap. To run Vista deacently you need atleast 1gig of ram and a pretty beefy cpu. just stick with XP pro untill you buy a new system.

Truly behind the times - WGA = Windows genuine application for Windows.
To update to Vista, you need a genuine version of Windows software.
We cannot encourage pirate copies, and I will certainly not- But if you have a genuine Vista, I read around.that the update will work as a new setup
So, if you have a genuine Vista, format your hard drive, and do a new clean install of Vista.
Yes, you might find it not perfect, but I have heard that it will run with less than 1gb ram - you can always tweak out unneccessary stuff to get better performance

Ahem, WGA=Windows Genuine Advantage.;) Anti-piracy attempt by MS but I see it doesn't work too well. As to Vista, a clean install is always the best as with the change from '98 to XP.

Yes - to pirates-disadvantage- I slipped up there, and did not come back to correct it.
I also forgot to say by academic, I meant that it does not matter, as he needs to pass WINDOWS GENUINE ADVANTAGE:guitar

Ya, and screw the pirates. If one wants an OS for free, go learn Linux. I'll pay for the lesser troubles with MS, thank you.;)

By clean install, you mean overwriting XP, right?

And is my graphics card able to use Aero?

The 9500 video card is a really good chipset so you're ok there. As posted before though you want atleast 1gb of ram and ram is REALLY cheap right now so I'[d get some while its affordable.

With Vista, you can actually use vista to "upgrade" You install vista and choose not to enter a license key for the first install and then install over that..vista will detect the previous installation and allow the upgrade. THis is totally legit and I read about it in i think Windows Secrets.

Cool. I think I'll replace my 256 with another 512.

Save any data, that you want to dvd/cd. Extra ram will make sure it will run o.k.
I will be surprised if you can run the test , as I said, I don't know about the way Jadestar suggests - But, check all the driver compatabilty, by searching the forum, in case you get stuck.

You can run the upgrade advisor on a hooky copy of XP fine, you can download it here http://www.majorgeeks.com/Windows_Vista_Upgrade_Advisor_d5485.html

Do not buy Vista Home Basic as Aero is not available with that version you will need Home Premium or Ultimate. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/choose.mspx

The Radeon 9600s can run Aero Glass, however if your PC is a Laptop some Mobility 9600s didnt from what I remember from the beta test days so maybe wise to also run ATIs tool to assess your PC http://ati.amd.com/technology/windowsvista/GetReady.html
