I use Foxit Reader. It's a small executable file that opens them up super fast and allows you to print, zoom, etc... has all the major features you would need for PDF.

well, what i want to do is to separate the text from the images, without losing image quality and combine a few 1 page pdf files into one.
    i can't really do that with foxit-reader

Foxit is a GREAT application for VIEWING PDF files, but there no ability to EDIT PDF files.

Actually, I've done some research into alternative PDF EDITING programs, and I couldn't find any free ones either. There are a couple shareware products out there, but their quality is incomparable to Adobe Acrobat. I'd go with Acrobat.

HOWEVER, if you only need to CREATE PDF files, there are LOTS of free ways to do so. The application I prefer is PDFCreator, which will let you print from any application into a PDF file.
