is there a free program that will convert an mkv video to avi without losing quality

    i just got some videos that are in mkv format (mainly because the provider of such videos wanted to put subtitles and another language in it) all of the mkv video converter that i have been looking for aren't free i need a free version of this kind of software that also won't do anything to the quality of the videos (they are top notch quality and i don't want that to change)

    yeah but how do i choose which language i want it to play when i convert it to an avi (the japanese audio track is the default language for the video so chances are that if i changed the extension of the file it will play in japanese if it worked i also don't want the subtitles there)

    To be honest you would have to know that the mkv actually has multiple languages embedded in it already and should have read more closely your post as I skipped the language bit, but think you would have to use a video editing application and they generally for editing a original multi-language video and removing the subtitles is not in the realms of freeware applications that I know of, more the conversion of the file from one format to the other sorry.

    If the video was ripped then chances are the subtitles and language are the only ones embedded in the file.
