Is there a tool for testing restore points for validity on Windows 7

    What do you make images with?

    It's almost midnight, I still have the two restore points I had several hours ago.

    I did notice this in the event log

    volsnap The shadow copies of volume C: were aborted because of an IO failure on volume C:.

    That's the only red item in the system log from yeserday. In between when the restore points were present and when they were first noticed missing.

    I make images with Acronis True Image. It isn't the easiest program to use and the 2015 version is not one of the better versions. I usually fire up an old version, Home 2010 being my favorite, from a CD. I make images outside of Windows. The CD loads the program in RAM and I image either to DVDs (usually on the first image) or several external hard drives.

    I made another restore point last night. I have 6. My "allocated" disk space is 3.905, despite showing 10.419 as maximum. The images take up 3.424. I suspect when I create another restore point, the earliest one will disappear.

    I'm about to create on now and I'll report back what happened.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    My allocated space bumped up to 3.925 and I have 7 restore points using 3.623
    It's 8:53 AM on Monday and the restore points I manually created on Saturday are still there.
    That's a record - restore points lasting more than 24 hours!
    It sure is a recent record. It looks to me like they are being deleted on a schedule. I looked through the task scheduler but I didn't find an scheduled event. I half expected to. But no.
    This is an interesting thread because I had problems with my system restore in Win7 which were troubling. At first, I was surprised at how few are created in Win7. I upped the allotted space and got more, but never the same comfortable number offered in XP.
    I then noticed that my "System Protection" button had disappeared. I noticed this because I had wanted to "create a restore point" which I could only find by clicking on the System Protection button. I restored the computer using one of the system restore points that is created automatically and received the message that it had been successful. When I later opened my admin account, I received the message that it had not been successful.
    I reformatted and reinstalled Win7, reset the allotted space for the system restore points and then it worked again. I always suspected malware in that particular case.
    One of the things I find disconcerting about the upgrades from one operating system to the next, is that it seems to be harder and harder to keep an overview of what the computer is doing. With each successive version, the transparency seems to be disappearing a little bit more. (could be my imagination)
    I now have two restore points that are over 48 hours old, one manual, one that was created by a tool from tweaking.com
    Woo hoo.
    I ran chkdks /f /r overnight.
    My two restore points are gone.
    I don't know if that is related or not.
    I had restore points yesterday.
    Today I got a popup that Updates were available. I opened up the restore program and all 7 restore points are gone!
    I have to assume that MS is doing this because I did not do any cleanup yesterday.
    I did a flash update and a FF ESR update yesterday. I don't remember if I checked the restore points after I did these two updates. Other than that, I did not add or remove anything.
    We had our monthly updates today plodr but both our Win 7 systems have retained all their restore points, some going back to April 2014 (System Image restore points seem to be retained permanently).
    I had another look and MS created 2 restore points today. The other 7 points are gone.
    I'm glad I rely on off the computer images rather than restore points. Clearly I have no control over when restore points are removed as I just discovered this morning!
    Note: I do not use cleaning tools often and then only CCLeaner so I am clueless as to what removed them and why. I have sufficient space allotted so why all 7 were removed is a mystery.
    I think we are on the trail of this mystery.
    I really didn't like CCleaner. It wanted to run all the time and do things, and I like to know what is being done. A conflict. Similar to the conflict we have with the restore points not being reliable.
    When I started working on this, I had restore points, but they could not be used. Corrupted, if I tried to use them.
