    Hi there,

My dad is not exactly computer literate and has a years-long history of getting viruses on his computer, including some requiring cleanings from professionals, one of which cost $240! I've had to clean his computer 3 times in the last few months of massive hijackings of his computer. I don't think I ever got it entirely clean and it kept getting reinfected.

Lately his computer has been painfully slllllllllllllllllllooooooooooow. (Like a minute to register a mouse/key click and sever minutes to launch a program.)

Thankfully I found your site. Thank you very much for your detailed malware removal information! I followed the instructions and the programs you recommended found a bunch of stuff. However, just for fun, I ran Adaware after I finished all that, and it's saying it found 16 things. I realize that it might have just found files from the other anti-malware programs that caused a false positive, but I can't tell for sure.

So...could someone please look at the logs and see if this baby is finally clean and I can establish a restore point?

Thank you so very much for your help! :)

Your computer is slow because of this:
You only have 51 MB to run anything.....you need two to three times that amount, and 1 GB would be best.

    Now:
Run this: Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    Use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    ViewPoint Media Player

    Now download and install:
    Java Runtime 6

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now use windows explorer to find and delete:
    c:\program files\Privacy components

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file.

First off, thank you very much, TimW.

I agree that this is hardly any memory. (I have 4 GB on my computer.) I'm gonna see if I have any sticks laying around that are usable in this computer.

However, the 256 was aquequate for my dad's minimal usage (email and surfing only) up until the hijackers were using it all up.

Done. I hope I was supposed to reboot as the Disable/Remove Windows Messeger said no changes would take place unless I rebooted.

Done. However, I'm confused as to why Java is needed. My dad didn't have it before and I thought it's somewhat more of a possible secuirty risk and processor hog...

    Sucessful. :)

Now this is the thing that got my dad to come to me this time to fix his computer. I thought I got the bugger off.

However, I *do not see it*. In program files, it goes from Outlook Express to Quick Time. I have all my folders set to visible.

Done. I hope it is the new log and not from last time. Does MGlogs just overwrite C:\MGlogs.zip every time a new log is run?

    Thanks again!!

You need to tell me exactly where Ad-aware found those item. (Personally ad-aware is becoming useless....MBAM and SAS are far better). Will check your new log in the morning.

    Hi TimW,

I couldn't figure out how to see what infections the computer had last time I ran Ad-Aware, but now that I ran it again I see what exactly they are. Two are "MRU Objects" (Supposedly stands for Most Recently Used) and the rest are tracking cookies.

A few on the 'net are saying that those items are really just a ploy on Ad-Aware's end to get people to buy the professional version and that they're nothing to worry about. Is that true? Or are some tracking cookies "normal" and some are worrisome?

    I attached a screenshot of Ad-Aware's "Infections".

Also, do I need to worry about Privacy components hiding out somewhere since you said I needed to remove it but I'm not seeing it where you say it should be?

    Thanks again!! :)

That is why I said you should uninstall Ad-aware...it is full of false positives as well as alerting you to non-malware items to scare you.

I had you look for that folder as a precaution. I believed it was gone, but wanted you to double check it.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thank you, Tim. I'm assuming that you looked at my second log (after I did the fixes suggested by you) and you don't see any other malware?

Thanks for all your help. (I gave you a "thanks" for this thread.)

Yes...I looked at the new log...and you are clean. Just dump Ad-aware. :)

    And you are most welcome.
