My cable was free installation, and they had to run wire from the pole out front to the house, drill through the wall, and install the box. $700 for installation? WTF are they charging you for, launching the satellite? Especially when you already have the television service (my cable tv was free installation as well, and they had to run more cable from the box to the other end of my house and drill another hole in the wall).

$60 per month, however, is about right for broadband.

I think the setup fee is so much because the setup requires a especial dish that can send and receive signals

The regular dish is only able to receive and not send

therefore they would have to change your dish for a more sophisticated one

thus the 700 dollars required from you

From the information I've received, Dish has yet to go with broadband internet. I know that Direcway has had broadband internet for quite some time now. My parents bought broadband internet service two years ago. I think it was about $500 with free installation. Though, my parents only had to pay $100 a month for about 10 months to pay it off. $50 for service and $50 for the unit.

In the end, they paid up front.

Lately, it seems there are quite a few deals out that brings this price way down.

I know you said that you live out in the boondocks, but...in my neighboorhood (far west suburb of chicago) I get SBC dsl for 19.99 a month, and it came with a free modem and self installation kit!! Even if you have them install it...it only cost 70.00 dollars!!

Sounds like the guy that you was talking to is smoking crack!!

DSL is only available if you are within a very limited range of your CO. Those lucky enough to live in new subdivisions or major cities can get it, anyone in an older neighbourhood or outside a city for the most part can't. My neighbours across the street, who live in a new development, can get it. I can't, because my wiring is too old and I'm WAY too far away (over 2 miles in actual wire distance). And I live less than 5 miles outside the 2nd largest city in the state.
