is windows firewall anygood?

    is windows firewall anygood?
    have been using others and always after a while they seem to pack up and stop ftp/browsers/programs working, have tried outpost, armor2net, zone alarm and they all do the same.
    However windows firewall seems to always work and pass secuirity tests, so what is the difference other than fancy displays?

    Yes/No... windows firewall albiet is very capable of passing those incomming data tests and blocks port scans etc.. it WILL NOT however help you if you contract a virus/trojan/dialer/spyware/keylogger that wants to phone home as it doesnt block outgoing data packets.

    That is where the 3rd party Firewalls like the ones you mentioned come in handy as they not only block incomming traffic but they also block outgoing traffic unless you have specifically allowed an app access.

    :cool: I have found that windows firewall to be good, I keep Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy which keeps the nasties off of my system, I have the Plus version of Ad-Aware which has Ad-Watch and that keeps stuff from coming on my system. I have AOL's custom sender list and I have 0 spam. So that keeps stuff from coming on too. All of that combined the Windows works great.

    I would disable windows firewall and download one of those free firewalls that Shadow_Puter_Dude suggested. These are all good firewalls even tho they are free.
