island life

so i was in the car talking to my son about school. his 'class' has moved from the beach to the forest and he is now required to wear shoes, which he hates.

"mum, look at my poor feet. they're turning under arm white, and you know thats not right dont you. my feet look ill like the people from england do!"

I went to england with my dad many years ago
(I dont remember exactly where I was very young)
and it was quite dreary
I loved it, the rain was the best
of course I love rain
wind I could live without


but anyway isn't england an Island too. . .?
for that matter . .aren't all cont. just big friggn islands?

Hawaii must be the only place you can turn up in COURT with shorts, teeshirts and flip flops! there is NO dress code here. half the children don't wear anything on their feet, and EVERYBODY wears flip flops or 'slippahs' as they are known here. when i take Jacob to england i have a real hard time getting him in shoes. last time i gave it up and told him he could wear slippers as long as he kept them on his feet, and if i saw him barefoot i would put him back in shoes.

 

he goes to a special Hawaiian 'immersion' school. they hold all their 'classes' outside. they have 'project based learning' which means that they learn the three 'r's by growing and weeding, measuring water flows and content, studying the stars and moon phases, the tides, etc. hes a very lucky little boy, but of course doesn't know it! aloha everybody. happy Wednesday.
