I need a user friendly program that will convert an ISO to MPG. IF I had to go the long way around and first use the ISO to create IFO and VOB files, would I use the VOB or IFO files to then create the MPG?

Do you know of a program that is truly freeware without creating banners in the output file that, again user friendly, will convert an iso to am mpg?

I don't know of a direct program off hand but if you google "dvd to mpeg" you should be able to find something. Vob files, of which there are usually 4 or 5 to the main movie on a dvd, are actually mpeg files with some extra information included inside. You could literally rename them to .mpeg and converters would recognize them. Your problem then is there are 4 or 5 separate files instead of one.

Here is a neat trick to join 4 vob files into one:
    1. copy the 4 or 5 files directly under the C: drive (Under the letter not in any folder) just for simplicity, you can delete them later.

Open note pad and create a line in this fashion or you can copy mine and alter it if you have more files:

    COPY /B VTS_01_1.VOB+VTS_01_2.VOB+VTS_01_3.VOB+VTS_01_4.VOB joined.vob
(there is a space between the COPY and the /B then again between /B and the first VTS as well as a space betwen the last VTS_01_4.VOB and the final joined files name joined.vob) you can modify it by adding a +VTS_01_5.VOB if you need it.

What this will do is copy the four VTS files into one and name it joined.vob or anything you choose.

With all four files directly under the C drive, go to Start > Run and type CMD hit enter

at the prompt type cd c:\ (space between cd and c:\) that should change the prompt from Documents and Settings to just C:\>

Copy your line (COPY /B) and paste it into the C prompt and hit enter

if you did everything right after a while you will end up with single fully joined vob movie file under your C drive. You can rename it to .mpeg, convert it to avi with Virtual Dub Mod or any other converter you found.

You can try a couple of things with the ISO image file first: mount it with a virtual CD app like Daemon Tools, Magic Disk, or Alcohol 52% (these are all freeware). Then copy the files from the virtual drive to a folder on your hard drive. Or you can use TUGzip (a freeware archiver like WinZip or WinRAR) to extract the ISO image much like you'd extract a zip file or rar file. Once you have extracted/copied the ISO's contents, you can then concern yourself with converting them to other formats. If you can post what types of files are within the ISO, we can provide some advice on how to go about converting them....

I know Alcohol 52% can identify file protections prior to being loaded into Alcohol120% but I was not aware it had its own virtual drive.
