Issue installing new sound card on vista

    Hi All

I am having some serious issues installing a new soundcard.

The card is an Auzentech X Raider 7.1. I am operating Windows Vista.

I have installed / uninstalled / reinstalled the card using the most up to date drivers from their website, and from the disk it came with. I have tried 2 different PCI slots as well.

I also disabled the onboard sound card through my Bios.

Every time I install the card it says it is detected, and seems to install the software correctly. However I get no sound at all (and a red X over the sounds icon in my system tray, despite the soundcard software icon appearing in the tray as well).

In the device manager it says that the card is working properly, and I still get no sound after disabling / enabling the card through there.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks a million!

When going into the soundcard software, make sure that analog mode is enabled and digital is disabled and SPDIF is turned off. Also make sure under analog mode that you have speakers enabled under the main tab. You may have to play around with some of the settings.

Are there any yellow exclamation marks in device manager? If this does not work there is another driver from the chip maker that can be installed. It is a newer driver.

    C-Media CMI 8768 Audio Processor

You will need to provide an email address and password for creating an account in order to download the driver.

    Thanks Tgell!

    I'll try this tonight.

Do you have any idea where I would find "analog mode" in the software and where I can turn SPDIF off? I played around in the software a bit last night don't remember seeing these settings.

Also, do you think changing these settings will impact the "red x" over my sound icon in the system tray?

In device manager there was no yellow exclamations or anything else like that...

If your solutions don't work I'll also try the new driver.

Thanks again for your help - hopefully this will work.

I downloaded the manual and SPDIF looks like a blue button. I could not say what the exact procedure is for enabling analog. The CD you got with the card should have the manual. If not you can download it from their website. I can remember reading where people had digital mode turned on and got their speakers to work with analog (realtek HD manager). Cannot say if this would cause the red x on the speaker though. Also make sure you have the speaker plugged into the correct location on the card per your manual.

And make sure Windows audio service is set to Automatic. Make sure Plug and Play service is enabled first.

    Awesome - Thanks!

I'll play around in the software to see if I can get it working and turn the audio services to Automatic.

    Thanks again!

    Still no luck.

For some reason I dont think the drivers are installing correctly.

Under the device manager it says its working properly, however when I click on the the sound w/ red X icon and go to volume mixer it says "no audio device is installed."

Any ideas on where I can find other drivers or make sure they are installing correctly?

    Thanks!

If you have tried the other driver I linked too and it did not work, I am out of ideas. Try posting in the Driver Forum about your problem. Somebody may be able to help you out.

I tried to download the other drivers from that site, but the link must be broken for the regular vista CMI 8768 drivers.

DO you think the CMI8768+ drivers would work? Worth a try maybe?

OK. So I think I'm giving up this one.

    2 options now:

    1) replace this with another card - What are your thoughts on this card as a replacement?
    http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=40&item_id=040408

    2) try and fix the problem i initially bought the card to fix! the reason I wanted to buy a discrete card is because I can't get my on-board mic jack to work. Any thoughts on drivers I could install to try and fix this? (and save money on buying another card!)

Here are my specs running the on-board card:

    Operating System
    MS Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit
    CPU
    AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 36 °C
    Venice 90nm Technology
    RAM
    2.50 GB Single-Channel DDR @ 201MHz (3-4-4-8)
    Motherboard
    ASUSTeK Computer INC. A8N-SLI (Socket 939) 40 °C
    Graphics
    L1970HR (1280x1024@60Hz)
    ATI Radeon HD 5670 (Sapphire/PCPartner) 31 °C
    Hard Drives
488GB Western Digital WDC WD5000AAKS-00V1A0 ATA Device (SATA) 34 °C
    Optical Drives
    LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160P6S ATA Device
    VCJ F49ARW9 SCSI CdRom Device
    Audio
    Realtek AC'97 Audio

Thanks again for all your help. I TRULY appreciate it.

Don't give up yet. I found another site for the Vista driver. Download and see if it solves the problem.

    http://www.x-drivers.com/catalog/dr.../c-media/models/cmi8768/wrong_code/13121.html

If the above driver does not work, we can always install the latest Realtek driver for your on-board sound.

As far as the onboard mic not working. Was it enabled under recording devices? Is there anything in BIOS related to the outputs? I found this on Asus's site.

the other drivers wont work either... still getting some weird issues. it says its installed, but still working.

As for the on board, yes the mic is enabled under the sound settings. Any ideas where I can find the latest vista drivers for it?

Ill also check the bios, but i don't recall anything there. All this started when I installed Vista, so I think its a software / driver issue.

    Thanks again!

It seems that Vista has a big problem with sound devices not being detected. If you google "no audio output device installed vista" you will see what I mean. I am really at a loss as to what the problem could be. You could try one other method and that is to right click your sound card in Device Manager and select Update driver and let it try to find a driver using Windows Update but that is like a last resort for me.

We can try using the onboard sound chip and install the latest drivers to see what that does if you wish.

The lastest drivers for your onboard sound is here.

I would also recommend that you contact Auzentech's support site if you have not already done so and see if they may have a solution or have heard of this problem with their card.

Thanks again for all your help.

I've given up on the onbaord card. After all the frustration the manufacturer got back to me and told me to reinstall my OS. Something I'm not really prepared to do at this point!

Back to the store for it I guess!!

Re: the onboard card, do you know how I can test to see if the mic input jack is working? I get sound fine and I have tested my mic on another computer.

Do you know if I have to connect anything special to the motherboard to get the mic input to work? I put in a new power supply at the same time as installing vista, so i want to rule that out.

As for the drivers you suggested, it doesn't have Vista as a supported OS on the drivers page. Should I still try them out?

    Thanks again!

I am not that familiar with your motherboard. It has something called Jack-sensing where it automatically detects what is connected. Is there any more info on this in your motherboard manual? I tried to see what the I/O looked like in the back but there were no pictures on their site. Power supply should not affect the mic.

Edit: Sorry about the driver I linked to.
Here is the Realtek page for the AC-97 drivers. Yours is the first driver listed.

So I installed the drivers from the site, and they caused all the audio on my system to stop working from the on board card... got the same red x problem as with the discrete card.

Had to run a system restore to get the audio working again.

I have no idea of what is going wrong here...

Do you have another link the the site to download the sweeper program - got a 404 error when I tried to download it.

As for the motherboard, I was looking at it and there are 2, 4 pin connectors right next to the audio inputs. I think they are the optical audio connector and auxillery audio connector. I doubt either have anything to do with the mic, but they are both unplugged right now.

I cant believe how bad vista is.

Your microphone plug should go into the pink port. Is this what you used?

    Good question!

Yeah the mic is plugged into the pink port :)

I checked that a few times during this during the whole ordeal!
