Hi, I'm having some problems with my laptop. I think most of my issues started over a month ago after installing a new version of DirectX.
My browser started running slow, and it had trouble loading pages completely most of the time. I think my computer was running slow in general as well.
Another problem, is starting up Windows XP. Often, when I turned my laptop on, a black screen appears saying Windows was unable to start successfully. After a few tries, windows eventually loads in normal mode.

I've gone through the steps in the Read and Run thread. I skipped over ComboFix though, as requested in the thread. My logs are attached.

My browser seems to be running faster again, and I haven't had any trouble loading pages so far. However, after scanning with Malwarebytes and then restarting the computer to fully remove the threats, my computer once again had trouble loading normally. It tried to run Windows in normal mode again, but got stuck on the Windows XP loading screen for awhile so I turned of my laptop and then turned it on again. The black failure screen appeared again, but it was able to load Windows after a second try. So it seems I'm still left with this problem.

    Thank you for your time!

I am not seeing any malware in your logs and MBAM didn't remove any critical system file which could have been infected so I think you will be better off heading to the software forum to try and resolve what issues you have.

Let's just do this to finish off here:

Why haven't you got any anti virus on this machine? You are leaving yourself wide open to attack by surfing without any. ) Refer to our "How to protect yourself from Malware" link in my final steps to choose from a list of reccommended anti virus)

Delete all files in the below folder except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

I am not saying you haven't enough memory to run this machine however to consider upgrading to 1GB would do your system performance the world of good, and also when you install anti virus even less resources will be available to you, another good reason to add more RAM.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Oh, I did have an antivirus. I just uninstalled AVG before doing the scans because I found it slowed things down. After scanning, I installed Avira AntiVir instead. Sorry for the confusion. I've followed the other clean-up and protection guidelines as instructed.

Thanks for the quick reply and checking my logs. I'll look into upgrading my RAM and try the software forum for help with my lingering start-up issues then.
