    Hi everyone.

Just a quick question. My computer currently has this cpu (info from Everest)... AMD Athlon XP, 1350 MHz (13.5 x 100) 1500+ with 256 MB memory (DDR SDRAM). I would also like to upgrade the memory if needed. Sometimes games cause the computer to restart and such so I figured better to upgrade now before I have a problem and no money to fix it.

To best help you with an Upgrade, we need to know all your specs,
Brand/Model PC, or if custom built what exact brand/model MOBO plus your other hardware.

How much money ya willing to spend?
What do you use this system for?

If your running XP another 256mb or more mem will help.
Your PC restarting that could be alot of things, My first thought what Video card are ya running? & what brand & size PSU do ya have?

    Thats enough info
You can certainly do alot of upgrading.
How much Money ya got ?
At some point Money would be better spent on new system?

    Memory add another 256
Then consider CPU/MOBO & Video card but this where I would consider a completely new system.
Your current system uses a socket A cpu the best MOBO for socket A is one that uses Nforce 2 chipset

If I were buying new system today, I'd go Athlon 64 939 CPU family with a Asus or DFI mobo & 7800GT graphics and atleast 1 gig of mem.

  5. mysticscooby

That would be great but I can't afford to buy a new system. At this point I just need to keep this one going because I'm a full time student with two teens in the home and so, I am sure you can imagine...

A good upgrade would definitely include at least another 256Mb stick of RAM. After that, if you are upgrading for games, I would suggest a new video card, followed closely by a new CPU.

First though, you'll have to let us know how much you are willing to spend if you want any specific suggestions.

Doesn't anyone think this may be a CPU cooling problem?

  8. Steeev

    Steeev Corporal

Certainly could be, or a motherboard problem, or PSU problem.
My advice would be to find out what's the definite cause of the problem before forking out money for a CPU.
If you're on a tight budget the last thing you want to do is replace a component to find the problem's still there.
There are quite a few threads dealing with computers restarting and it may be worth reading them to see if they help with your problem.
    good luck mysticscooby! :)

I may be wrong, and someone else please correct me if I am !! But it's my understanding that if an AMD processor overheats, it will shut down the computer, or restart it, to attempt to save the CPU. While a Pentium, will slow it's clock speed down, in an attempt to cool itself.
If I were working on this machine, I'd start by making sure the processors cooling fan was operating, and that the fins of the heatsink wern't clogged up with dust. If that was all ok, I'd pull the sink, and make sure there's good compound under it, and the proper amount.
If a computer is custom built, I take nothing for granted. There ARE places that build customs, that just throw parts together.
I worked on a machine a few months ago with a restating problem. When I pulled the processor heatsink, it had heatsink compound on it. BOY, did it have compound on it !! So much, that it was not just on the slug, but caked all over AROUND the whole chip, and squished around the socket, and onto the motherboard !! It was a "custom" built computer. I've also seen some with what looked like a small dried up scab of compound on them, as well as no compound or factory compound "pad" at all.
I'd concentrate on CPU cooling first. Then Power Supply.
Work the hell out of the processor by gaming on it with the tower cover off, then after a while, CAREFULLY put your finger on the side of the heatsink (being careful to touch ONLY the heatsink), and see if it's blazing hot. But that's ONLY after you check the compound situation. If it's hot, get a larger CPU cooler, and try that out. But remember, if there's issues with compound, the heat may not be getting fully conducted into the heatsink in the first place.

Ok, I have replaced both the fan and the CPU (with a larger one) but when I put the new cpu in, the computer won't start. I cleared the CMOS and it still won't start... Hoping someone can help!!!!

More info: It's not making the "your fan isn't working right noise", it just turns the fan a little and that's it. Nothing else happens.

    Steeev Corporal

Does your fan have a 4 pin molex connector (the same power connector that goes into your hard drive and CDrom). Maybe try plugging it straight in there, it should run at full speed. May be a problem with the 3 pin CPU fan power socket.

Either that, or it could simply mean that the CPU is throttling the fan back, as it doesn't require maximum fan cooling.
