It Disgusts Me

When I think about Spyware & Viruses in the broader context, it disgusts me that we have to take all these proactive steps and run programs just to prevent our computers from being taken over... no one should be blind to the threats out there but lets be honest, any novice on a computer who is not well informed about spyware and viruses is almost 100% guaranteed to have their computer screwed up by this stuff...

Lawmakers need to tackle these issues head on because i only see it getting worse... just looking at the popularity of this Spyware forum grow in the past 2 years, it has grown significantly...

i feel bad for friends and family who are innocently surfing the internet and get bombarded with this f'n crap... people should be able to utilize the internet without being attacked...

i don't even understand how spyware/adaware companies profit from it... in the history of the internet has anyone actually clicked on an unwanted popup add and decided to purchase something???

That's only a small piece of it. When they redirect you to other places or have popups hit you, they get advertising hits ($$$$). If they get their crap onto your PC and then get some suckers to by a removal tool, they make more money. And remember some of it is also meant to be more like a virus/trojan, that is, just to be destructive or to drive you nuts.

The same PC illiterate users who get infected are the ones most likely to believe some adverstisement that pops up is legit. And they will also believe it when it tells them it will solve all there problems.

Chas i can't help but feel bad that you and BJGarrick are the only ones helping people with this complicated mess called Spyware Removal... i'd offer to help but i clearly do not possess the know-how... whatever happened to that MG user PhilliePhan? He seemed to know what he was doing...

it's sad to think that Spyware Removal could almost qualify as a full time job, given the number of infected users seeking help...

I'm just waiting for the day my computer gets infected again... Granted I've taken all the necessary steps to protect myself (Mozilla Firefox, Firewall, Adaware/Spybot, SpywareBlaster, and watching where i surf), I can't help but feel it's inevitable....

feels like the more popular these anti-spyware measures become, the less effective they will be... Mozilla Firefox is becoming extremely popular... i don't know the techinical aspects of the browser itself but i'm guessing that with its growing popularity, the more insecure it will become in due time...

PP spends most of his free time on another site. Still fighting malware. He does not come here to much (He's just a no good slacker!;) That' was meant for PP eyes since I know he still comes here and reads.)

Yes it is a full time job. Anyone willing to pay me for my services, I would gladly provide them. ;)

Mozilla has had it's share of security holes. A big one was fixed just recently. But since IE is the primary application in use and it is a Microsoft product, that's the one most of these malware programs focus on.

The first line of defense is the user on the PC. Even with every know protection program available install, the user can still be the actual reason that something bad gets into the PC. We could go on and on with this topic. Needless to say, everyone needs to be aware of the problems that are out there and should have at a minimum follow the steps mentioned in How to Protect yourself from malware!

You should get microsoft to pay you for your work to be honest. Without anti spyware tools and people to inform others... Windows would be rather F'kd up. It's nice to see Microsoft working on anti spyware tools more now though. =) This problem just isn't gonna go away easy what ever happens.

I think in alot of ways it is inevitable, if you are online at some point you'll have to deal with them.
I recently had the cere.ddl/buddy.exe combo going on mine, only found out because buddy.exe asked zone alarm for internet access.
Got it cleared out but still have no idea where it came from in the first place.
that's a monster to remove too.
