IT headache or "helpdesk nighmares"

Does any one out there have this experience... when multiple users have multiple logon scripts and they all think you know exactley which "drive" is which.

It bugs the crap outta me that the office manager says 'why is the G-drive mapped to E in here?' Like looking at the drive mappings and names is so difficult to understand. I understand a lot of these users have PEBKAC issues if every item on the workstation is not exactley like last time.

Drive G on my PC is the CD-Rom & I dont have the same shares mapped anyway... be specific! Also before I got here they had a DC and totally different mappings that some people still have scripted...argh!

Open My Computer or Explorer and work it out....

 

Not experienced a situation like that. However, most IT firms I've worked for and their clients insist on a standard desktop to minimise the such support issues. Basically if something goes wrong the PC is simply re-imaged to a known baseline configuration (which includes licensed approved applications).

One of the current clients is even going further to lock down the C drive to prevent this being writable. With 10's of thousand of desktops it makes sense to do this to prevent many or all of the desktops suffering the same "affliction".

 

ah.... reboot, recreate profile, reimage, replace..... the 4 r's of sanity taught to me after spending 3 hours working on someone's outlook problems.

 

yeah that would be nice but they lease and rotate PCs all the time and the hardware changes (ie "the drives") and they call them by drive letters when only 7 people map to that "drive" .. So when they say "my x drive is down" I wanna ... nevermind.
Plus our corp runs the directory - so I'd have to tell them to redo all scripts..

I've been here 2 months & it is getting interesting.. the guy here before me worked his way up from a user to the 'tech guy'...
