It started with a rootkit...

I'm pretty sure I downloaded the virus on 6/19/09. Initially i was infected with a rootkit named tdss and skynet. Spyware doctor and avg were able to remove it, but I don't think I got all of it.

My computer is having slowness issues, but they are not major. If I leave the system on for long periods of time, I eventually run out of resources and windows XP starts telling me that I do not have the permissions to reboot, etc.

I work over a VPN, so system security is very important to me. I know I still have viruses-- the plethora of antimalware programs I've downloaded still find things and despite them claiming they get cleared, they do not.

Also I have an interesting symptom. I have a second copy of the "My Computer" located in the C:\ directory -- however, its label is "fixme". Otherwise it seems to act exactly as the "My Computer" would act.

Thanks in advance for any help you are able to give, I really do appreciate it.

    ~Dan

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

This is primarily due to what you have done. You have two antivirus (AVG & Spyware Doctor) programs running + Threatfire on top of them and also have some left overs from Symantec. And you have no less than 4 antispyware programs (AVG includes antispyware, CounterSpy, Spyware Doctor, SpyHunter which is junk and should be uninstalled).

Start by uninstalling the below very much not recommended programs:
    RemoveIT Pro v7 (Trial)
    SpyHunter

Now since CounterSpy appears to be somewhat broken anyway, uninstall it.

Is your copy of Spyware Doctor a paid version or just a trial? If paid, do you wish to keep it as your antivirus and antispyware program or do you want AVG? One as to go as stated in the READ & RUN ME.

Now I strongly suggest that you delete (or move somewhere else if you want to keep these) the below files out of the root folder where many tools may detect them as malware and delete them anyway. If fact the dumped.sys file will even be deleted in my fix since any .SYS file found here is 100% suspicious.
    Code:
    "C:\"
    aaaaa.txt Jun 22 2009 6032 "aaaaa.txt"
    aaw7boot.log Jul 8 2009 6315 "aaw7boot.log"
    ar950.exe Jun 19 2009 654208 "ar950.exe"
    avenger.zip Jun 19 2009 724952 "avenger.zip"
    ccsetu~1.exe Jun 22 2009 3247736 "ccsetup220.exe"
    cleanup.bat Jun 22 2009 574 "cleanup.bat"
    create~1.exe Jun 19 2009 156037120 "Create Secured2k BootCD.exe"
    dumped.sys Jun 19 2009 172032 "dumped.sys"
    FIXME Jun 19 2009 "fixme"
    rootki~1.zip Jun 22 2009 231390 "RootkitRevealer.zip"
    rootre~1.dmp Jun 19 2009 246132 "RootRepeal.dmp"
    rootre~1.exe May 31 2009 458240 "RootRepeal.exe"
    rootre~1.zip Jun 19 2009 451655 "RootRepeal.zip"
    settings.dat Jul 8 2009 12 "settings.dat"
    supera~1.exe Jun 19 2009 6406688 "SUPERAntiSpyware.exe"
    unlock~1.exe Jun 22 2009 261295 "unlocker1.8.7.exe"
    zip.exe Jun 22 2009 135168 "zip.exe"

Similar to the above, I strongly advise you to cleanup your Desktop. Remove eveything but links to run programs. Do not download and save programs here and defintely do not use it for long term storage. You need to keep ComboFix.exe here for now as we need it, but we will be removing it when we are finished with your cleanup. A cluttered Desktop is malware's playground and it can also cause performance degradation especially when you start saving large files here like you are doing.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
    O18 - Protocol: linkscanner - {F274614C-63F8-47D5-A4D1-FBDDE494F8D1} - (no file)
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thanks again for the help.

I followed your directions. My first attempt at removing SpyHunter reboot my machine, but the second attempt removed it without incident. Other than that, everything went fine.

Computer seems to be running fine, but I havent been on it very long.

You're welcome. Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
