when i have my ipod plugged into my computer (running xp home), it appears in itunes but i get an error message that says it cannot be found. when i first plug it into the usb, it appears in my computer but only for a moment. i plugged it in tonight and it looked like it was actually working, it started syncing, said it was complete, but then when i added a podcast itunes just froze. this seems to be a common problem but i havent been able to find a straightforward answer to the problem and it appears people arent getting any help from apple.

Goto the apple website, and search the ipod reset procedure for your device. It happens from time to time.

    Hi

What Windows version and Service Pack are you using?

I have had this before with my iPod touch and best workaround is to delete the USB driver for the iPod from Device Manager and then reboot and plug in the iPod again to re-install the driver.

To delete the driver, open Device Manager and then the USB Serial Bus Controllers branch and then plug in your iPod and look for the new driver added to the list then right click and uninstall, then unplug the iPod and reboot, then plug in your iPod and the driver will reinstall.

im running xp home service pack 3. i did what you said and its still not working. i plugged it in, it reinstalled everything, i brought up itunes and it started syncing for 5 minutes, the progress bar stalled, then it said it couldnt sync the ipod because the ipod wasnt found just like before. thanks for helping out, is there anything else i can do?

    Hi

yeah uninstall iTunes and then reinstall it, also when you have uninstalled iTunes, check device manager with your iPod connected and uninstall the driver for it as we tried earlier.

I have had this issue many times with my iphone and iPod Touch, in that the USB driver is not recognised, pitfall of Apple software.
