I am not sure if this is the best forum for this question, but here it goes -

I want to download music on the up-up. I was thinking about joining iTunes. They ask me to provide a credit card number when I join. I have no problem providing this, but it is not clear if they are going to charge me a monthly fee from the start. I just want to download songs.

I searched the site, faqs, etc, I just cannot seem to find an answer. If they do charge, I can just by some iTunes gift certificates for downloads - correct? How does Napster work? In a similar way?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

There is no monthly fee. They only charge you when you buy a song. You can use gift certificates or prepaid iTunes cards if you want.

You mean those spyware loaded peer-to-peer networks? I used to when they were legal. No more.

If that is what you mean by "free."
