Hi All, please be kind to a newby!

I have just recently had the misfortune to recieve an ipod so now must finally use iTunes. I downloaded iTunes 8.0 today but it would not start. About 2 seconds after starting the program I get the "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Message. After much messing about with all manner of combinations of programs enabled/disabled I am still in the same predicament.

The system is XP service pack 3 Updated today.
I have AVG 7.5 fully updated, Spybot S&D fully updated and neither of these returned any malware after their respective scans.
I am still using the Norton Firewall but itunes is permitted always. (Can't seem to get rid of that either but that's another story :p)
I created a new user on the computer and switched all of the virus/spyware/firewall/internet connection off. And installed it on that user profile but still got exactly the same problem.

I have been through all the advice on the apple troubleshooting page with no luck.

I did send the error report to Microsoft however after waiting in all afternoon for their technician to come round and fix my computer it doesn't look like they're going to show. LOL

Can any of you fine people assist me? Or should I just go and punch Old Aunt Elaine in the tits for buying me this ipod?
I can let you have the error report if needed.

    Cheers,
    Cad.

    :)

    Ok, Thanks for this.

I tried to uninstall through the CP but got a fatal error.
I then downloaded the setup file and clicked repair.
The installer advised that quicktime had been installed ok.
I then tried to remove again but got the same fatal error.
I then repaired from setup again.
I tried to start quicktime as a standalone but i got a message saying that quicktime encountered problems and needed to close... Are we getting warmer. Again if you want the error report i can provide.

    Thanks
    Chris.

    1. Go to C:\Program Files, then delete the entire QuickTime folder.

    2. Click Start - Find/Search - All Files And Folders, select the hard drive ( C: ) to look in, type in QuickTime, then click Find/Search. when the list of files appear, right-click on and delete all the ones that you confirm are associated with QuickTime.

    3. Click Start - Run, type in REGEDIT, then click OK. Click the + in:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    Software

In the Software sub-menu, right-click directly on the Apple Computer entry, then click Delete - Yes.

(Note: If you click the + in the "Apple Computer" entry, you'll see "QuickTime" listed there)

****Now to remove the QuickTime entry from Add/Remove Programs is very simple.

Go back into the registry and click the + in:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    Software
    Microsoft
    Windows
    CurrentVersion
    Uninstall

Start at the top of the Uninstall list and click on each sub-folder and look at the entries in the right pane. When you find the sub-folder for QuickTime, right-click it and delete it. The QuickTime entry will possibly be listed more than once in the Uninstall list, so keep going until you get to the bottom of the list.

Close the registry editor. The QuickTime entry should now be gone from Add/Remove Programs.

    Restart

Then download CCleaner run the system cleaner, then run the reg cleaner and delete all bad keys etc.

    then

install the Microsoft "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility" - downloadable from http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

Then download quicktime alternative which is available from http://www.free-codecs.com/QuickTime_Alternative_download.htm

Give that a try. let me know, i know it sounds like overkill, but it should help. :)

    Fantastic!

    Old Aunt Elaine thanks you.

It took me a while but thankfully I was able to follow your instructions and I am now up and running.

    Thanks,
    Cad.
