but my computer is still running like a slug. I have Dell4400, WinXP, service pack 2, 1.5GHz, Ad-aware, Spybot, CCleaner, AVG.

I have also done what Major Attitude suggests and disabled system restore, unhid hidden files and ran ALL the cleaners suggested and they found nothing.

The only things I recently changed on my computer were the mouse (I bought a logitech (non-wireless) ) and I have a new Creative MP3 player.

My system is VERY slow and sometimes when I access My Computer or All Programs I get a searchlight. Please help me before I drop-kick my computer into the Chesapeake Bay (knowing that violence is just a temporary fix)

    Hi Dez,

If you have exhausted ALL the options in the Cleanup Tutorial including all of the Online Scans, please send us a HijackThis Log. Be sure to follow the instructions below:

Note that your HijackThis should be up-to-date (v1.99.1) and MUST be extracted to its own safe folder – C:\Program Files\HijackThis! Should you need a Fresh Download of HJT, get it HERE: HijackThis v1.99.1

Also note that, before you scan, you MUST close all running programs including your web browser, e-mail and items in the system tray.

Please save your HJT Log as a .txt File and attach it via the "Manage Attachments" tool in the Additional Options section when you post.

    PP :)

Here is my HJT log. My system freezes sometimes so if I don't respond right away, I'm not sleepin'...

    Hi Dez,
You should move Hijack This into its own folder. Look at Phillie's #2 post in this thread. It shows you where to put it. After moving it run another scan and reattach.
    Good Luck, :)

I hope I have this right. I saved HJT to C Programfiles. I don't see 'Go Advance' but I do see 'Manage Attachments'. I'm not too experienced with this so thanks for your patience. If I'm still doing it wrong, I'll wait until a neighbor or someone can help me post it...Here goes!

Just gave your log a very quick glance as I am heading out the door for the evening, but no malware jumps out at me. You do have a lot of stuff running at startup that could be eating your resources, and you might want to pare some of those back a bit.

How many active User Accounts are on your machine?

There are three users on my XP. Do you mean that all three 'spaces' can harbor their own bugs?! I thought when the cleaners cleaned they would clean the whole system and not just its parts. Wow!

Okay, I may have too many processes at start-up--is there some way I can stop the unnecessary ones because I don't know what NEEDS to be there at start-up? I have searched your site for info on what should be present at start-up, but I haven't a clue. Thanks for any help...

Hey, I just found a site called Sysinfo.org and it has many startup items that may be stopped. Before I do anything, is this a legit site? I'll just wait for a response from you..

Yes! It is a legit site. And yes you need to clean each user account separately.

Oh, thanks! The other users had all kinds of stuff on them, thanks so much. One other thing, very rarely when I log on I get the black screen that states "Sorry Windows did not load properly..." and I have to choose how I want it to load by pressing load normally or whatever. Is this a problem or will it cease when I clean my computer?

Normally this is not a malware problem and is some other issue related to Windows itself; however, I would not even worry about it until you all of the malware clean off the PC. The reason being that even though I said "Normally....." , we have seen that malware can create just about any kind of problems you can imagine. Sometimes on purpose and sometimes as a result of things they break or windup breaking during a cleaning phase.

You're welcome. Continue with the cleaning steps like PP already gave you. Do them for all user accounts and if you run into any problems just leave a message in this thread.

Make sure you also do the steps in: How to Protect yourself from malware!
