After a long time out of the workforce, I've got a 3 month contract at Century mine, in outback OZ, controlling Rotable/Exchange spares.

    http://www.google.com.au/search?as_q=&num=20&hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&btnG=Google+Search&as_epq=century+mine&as_oq=&as_eq=&lr=&as_ft=i&as_filetype=&as_qdr=all&as_occt=any&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch=&safe=images

Looks like an interesting place. One thing is a 304 kilometre (approx 200 mile) underground pipeline from the mine to the port (karumba).

Roster is 14 days on, 7 days off and 12 hour days. Gonna be a bit hard to get used to. Bazza

Good for you Bazza...I myself have some medical issues that keep me from full-time work...but I bust my a** to work when I feel well enough, and even some days when I feel like s**t. It`s good therapy for a grown man to be able to earn...good for the head-space eh?

Thanks guys for the best wishes. I have had contracts extend well beyond the initial period. One for 3 months went to 2 years, another went to 3 years. A 6 month's contract in West Africa went to 18 months. This is going to be a tough one, I feel.

Don't know what their out-of -working hours access to the Internet is. Maybe missing from MG for a while, until my 7 days off. Gotta get a digital camera. Looks like a hell of a place for photos. Huge open cut etc. Always wanted to visit Karumba (bottom of the Gulf of Carpentaria), if I get the opportunity. Lived/worked, at the top of the Gulf for 15 years (Nhulunbuy, NT), never did get down to the bottom of the Gulf.
Start next Wednesday, 5 hour bus trip, than an aeroplane flight, to the "back of beyond".
It's gonna be very interesting, I reckon. Bazza

    Re: I've gotta job--UPDATE

Back in Cairns, after 14 x 12 hour days straight. Limited after hours access to the Net at the mine. They frown on Internet access during working hours for other than official business so I kept away from MG and emails and things. Huge hole in the ground, open pit mining. 7 hour trip from the Mine to get back home. Just a quick heads up, for now. Gotta ring a few people, pay a few bills, etc.

Thanks for the best wishes, folks.

Not sure how long I'll last out there. The main part of the job is to write procedures on handling Rotables/Repairables/Service Exchange and Remanufactured parts and identifying the relevant parts. I am not good at writing procedures so my next stint will bring the matter to a head, I reckon.

Looks like I may get another offer to go back to West Africa, to a mine I used to work in, before the rebel war closed it down, in 1995. That is my first preference, so have to wait and see. They are not too keen on employing ex-pats, as the locals are so much cheaper. Love that country and the people. My boss will be a family friend/co-worker/previous boss, for over 20 years, so I know what I am in for. Hope they've got after hours Internet access to MG. Gotta have my MG fix. That will be the first question I ask him. :D :D :D

Back to the mine, next Tuesday. Another 14 days without access to MG. I'll try the after hours access to the 'Net in the common room, but don't know how that will go. Probably the other users will get upset if I try and hog 1 of the 2 PC's for a 2-3 hour session on MG. No sense of humour, some people. Bazza

Back on break, away from the mine for 6 days.
Eventful trip back. Huge storm hit our mining area. Roads flooded and closed. A light plane crashed on landing at our airport. Nose wheel collapsed. No one hurt thank goodness. Big crane sent to shift it crashed at work and crushed a 4WD. No one hurt again. Runway flooded and we had to wait for 2 hours. Our plane eventually flew in from it's base, 1.5 hours away. We arrived back in Townsville, then I had a 4.5 hour bus trip. Got home this morning at 2 am. Up at 5.30am to get onto MG. Guess I'm hooked. 14 day by 12 hours are tiring, but I have found $1.2 million dollares worth of Inventory errors in my 2 x two week stints, plus other stuff. Hope this will get me a permanent job there. Enough from me.

Glad to be back in civilization, and MG. Bazza
