I've never seen so many spammers spam majorgeeks before.

There have been about 4 or 5 people trying to spam in the last few days. It's getting really annoying. Is it getting progressively worse these days or what?

 

Nah Mods have got lazy Seriously Spam will only get worse as PC's get cheaper and broadband more widely spread,people want a fast buck

 

@ Halo - Ah, I see. I haven't been on in months and thought that spamming was getting worse. Hopefully some spammers will take notice but I doubt those morons will.

 

Those spammers are making you work harder than you have to now that you have to make up witty comments. Damn them!!!

 

First thing I look at when I come to the lounge are the locked threads,when I see one I think yeh someone got toasted

Wonder if some of them type the whole paragraph when posting some of the more elaborate spam threads or have they discovered copy\paste yet

When you click the red triangle to report a bad post you get to type a message too. You can always arm the Mod with a suitable witty response so they don't have to work so hard

 

Now I can't wait for a new spam thread! I hope the next time I see one I can think of a funny comment to post.

Most of the spams have been closed by the time I get to the forum.
Damn, them mods, and readers, are efficient.

10-17 hour time difference makes it difficult for us Aussies to catch most spams, although I was able to report one to the mods just recently. Bazza

Just a thought re the spammers, on one site that I go to they automatically put a hold on your first post, which I would assume goes to the Mod for perusal, then if it appears Okay it is posted sometime later. Just a thought

That's done in buy-sell-trade, for obvious reasons.

Having a bit more of an "inside" view of this moderator business, spammers aren't the only frequent problem dealt with here on a regular basis. You'd be surprised how many people no longer welcome here have created multiple usernames just to keep coming back due to having little or no life. About a year ago there was one user that had 14 usernames; he'd sign up, cause trouble, get dealt with and keep coming back until the repetition got to be too much of a task for him. And actually, there's a couple here now that have multiple names that I know Abby is aware of; she's just waiting for the opportunity to call 'em out. I don't get why someone would be so obsessed with a message board to go to all the trouble; it's really kind of sad. I guess people don't realize what gives them away, but it does almost every time.

 

I've always wondered if the get rich quick schemes I see on TV are for spamming. A lot of these jerks think what they are doing is OK, so I do enjoy seeing their nose rubbed in it now and then. Difference between my dog and a spammer? My dog knows when his nose is being rubbed in it, and it's a lot less fun.

Whenever I see an unfamilar name with 0 posts I'll check it out. So far I've only got to see one, and it was taken care of promptly. Maybe we could have a points systems for spam flamers.

 

but most of those "spam bots"" are more then likely nothing but automated webcrawlign software designed to find forums and spam them, i want to mention this to everyone as sometimes people don't relize that. Its a much more common event in a phpBB2 type forums, but still happens in other forums.

 

Being that most of what I see here is an exact duplicate of the spam I get on the board I moderate, I'm guessing they know how to C&P. Shoot, some of the screen names are even the same.

By the way...leaving their posts with an edit to "teach them a lesson" or get them to understand they've done something wrong does absolutely nothing for them. These guys sign up at a site, spam as fast as they can, and never come back. So the only thing leaving comments does is amuse the regular site members. Which isn't a bad thing, and I do it, too sometimes...it just doesn't have the desired effect Halo mentioned early on in this thread.

 

Had the same multiple account issue problem when I moderated a chatroom. People just don't realize what gives them away Star, you are so right. And it is so easy to know. The other one we used to get a lot of was people pretending to be famous people. I had one guy trying to convince everyone he was Jeff Gordon signing in from his laptop (strangely located in a public library!!) and that his new jet was a no-longer-commissioned F15 that Homeland Securities provided him with lol. Some of it was just totally funny. I still laugh when I watch nascar and dear old Jeff can't get his Chevvie to the front, let alone handle an F15!!!

 

Funny you should mention that; within the past hour or so, Abby nailed someone with a username that raised all kinds of red flags to her. She kyboshed the user before they even got their thread posted, thus it was seen by no one. The capper? This person was already registered here, has several hundred posts, and has jeopardized their membership by trying to be funny. Man, it just never ends.

I wish we could spam those people back. If we could find out where they live and spam them in real life would be awesome. We could send them pizza's, limo's, cab's, flowers etc. to them. Or just keep knocking on there door and running away. It would be fun.
