Howdy folks. Long-time Geek, First-time poster.

My lady-friend snatched up the new iphone 4s and I have inherited her old 3gs. Being a non-att subscriber, I would like to jailbreak the 3gs. Searched for info but am highly suspicious of the results so far. Love to know what methods y'all have successfully used and would recommend.

Thanks for your time and help.

    Hi

While jailbreaking an iphone was made legal in the US, it's still a risky process and you run the distinct possibility of bricking your phone. Just so you are aware of that.

Here's a link from Wired: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2010/06/iphone-jailbreak-prime/ (bottom vid)

Here's another link you might want to get info from and maybe find the way to do it: http://www.redmondpie.com/category/iPhone/ It was mentioned in the Wired article I linked you to and has downloads for the different phones.

I've never done it and can't remember anyone on here getting any answers regarding it either. Maybe someone will come along who has.

    Good luck. :)

    Thanks for the advice.

Have come to realize that unlocking is more important than jailbreaking for me. Unfortunately my lady-friend updated this phone to iOS 5 before giving it to me. Looks like the best plan for this phone is to wait and hope for an exploit that allows the updated baseband to be unlocked. At least now I know where to look if/when that info becomes available.

As stated by Laura R, jailbreaking or modding any electronic device is a risky process. If you decide to have it done, it's a job best left to a technician who has experience and is willing to stand behind his/her work (if they fry it, they buy it :-D ).

Another issue I've heard about with iPhones is that some software and firmware updates offered by Apple can either make it harder to jailbreak the phone and/or mess up an existing jailbreak. As such, if you do jailbreak the phone, be wary of any "updates" Apple offers you.
