My friends are a US Army family. They're personally OK, but they're swamped helping rescue and run supplies.

Yes, but she is in New York this month. She has been in touch with her family in Japan and they are ok.

In that case Beth, they are doing a superb job out their, even if they are normally just working in the country, its kinda all hands to the pump so to speak.

My friends are researchers, and home for 6 months but likely to come back to the UK sooner than expected, I hope so as they will not only be out of danger but have a superb sense of humour and outlook on life.... as well as keep me on my toes :-o

Watched the movie Hereafter last night. Opening scene is a tsunami wiping out a tourist village. Brought the Japanese tsunami to life. I sure hope they get the nuclear power plants under control soon. It will be a huge effort to clean up and rebuild. :(

I kinda think the news agencies are focusing on the plant too much as a bad thing, its not good but its likely not as bad as its being portrayed, have to think of pre 24hr NEWS and global Internet to take stock of this, as we never really knew much of Kobe, 1995! and now its 24/7 of Fukushima et al and gloom and doom.

not a great place to be at present but I fear as I have been told by those in country its not a grim outlook as the press portays, they have to hit ratings and as every news agency is doing thr same they roll out nuclear expert afrer expert from the cobwebs of academia.

As for cleanup TimW I know the Japanese are much better than most countries at cleanup after any event, they will come through this very well, dispite the tragic loss of life..... they hold this in their hearts!

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

We just received news from our pseudo-adopted daughter that her parents are indeed safe (they live in a Tokyo suburb), although it took almost a week for her to hear from them.

They have passed along news that the nation is bonding in its rescue efforts, and that despite reports to the contrary the administration (even though they are almost completely overwhelmed) are apparently doing everything they can.

I've got a feeling that if any country can rebound from a disaster of this magnitude, Nippon can.

    Salute. :major
