Maybe a simple dumb question, but...

I'm making a Java program that interacts with a database. Right now I'm using MS Access, but since this might not work on non-Windows OSes I thought I'd convert to something else.
What databases (engines?) are multi-platform and don't require any extra downloads to get them to work? I just want to require JRE (to get Java to work) and that's it, no other stuff to get the database working.
