    In the process of installing Java, I get this error:

    "Java(TM) Update cannot retrieve the version information from the targeted directory."

    Then I get this error:

    "Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

    I've tried various solutions such as downloading Java from different places, uninstalling and reinstalling, and installing offline version. All of these methods have failed.

    Manually remove the JRE:

    1. Download Microsoft Windows Installer Removal Tool .
    2. Run the tool and select the J2SE Runtime Environment for your version of Java and click remove.

    Java should install just fine after that.

    I used the program and did what it said, but I didn't see where I could select the J2SE Runtime Environment for my version of Java where I could remove it. After I used the program, I tried installing once again and I still got the same error.

    Here is what Sun has to say about that eror.
    Which doesn't work for you.

    Using Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Program Files\Java <---- Delete the entire directory

    Now try to install JRE using the Offline Installer

    OK, here are some more options. Which ever one you think is the best option for you.

    1. Register the following DLL's manually:

    Start-->Run-->regsvr32 urlmon.dll
    Start-->Run-->regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
    Start-->Run-->regsvr32 Msjava.dll
    Start-->Run-->regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
    Start-->Run-->regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
    Start-->Run-->regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
    Start-->Run-->regsvr32 Browseui.dll
    Start-->Run-->regsvr32 Shell32.dll

    2. Run the offline installer and hit retry until it installs. (As many as 89 times)

    3. Do a custom install and install java in a different directory.

    I've tried the first and third option. The second option seems a bit extreme...

    Yeah, seems a little extreme but sometimes it actually works.

    I found the solution from java forum:

    NOTE:
    =====
    First I did delete the Java-folder and installed the java package in the c:\program files\.. folder. This did not help. Then I installed the Java RE 5.0 in C:\j2sdk folder and this time the intallation was succesfull.
