I've followed instructions from this pdf

    http://www.ucl.ac.uk/SLAIS/rob-miller/lectures/INSTG004/JoshInstructions.pdf

as to how to go about getting a jdk on my xp laptop. However, after following them and when i went to type

    "javac <myjavafilename>.java"

The dos prompt tells me that "javac" is not a recognisable operable command.

Any ideas as to what might be missing?

Also when i open the command promt, what should follow the " C:\"?

    Is there a simpler way?

ps. I downloaded "JDK 5.0 Update 6 includes the JVM technology" from the sun website.

    Thanks

Ok i now have it recognising "javac" etc. ie. it knows a jdk is available.

However, when i open the command prompt, I can only type stuff after a progression of 2 folders in the hierarchy.

    ie C:\documents\files>(type here)

How do I change this? as when i want to save a java file it then has to be within those folders for the command prompt to recognise it.

So when i move my java file to those folders, it then recognises it when i try to compile, but with 30+ errors. (it's just a simple 2 liner program). AND when i go back to file (which was created in word pad), it has been changed to a note pad file and the contents are all over the place.

anyone there? im sure it must be something simple. im a complete novice.
