Java Problems

I have a computer that was built about two months ago running Windows XP Home with SP2. Just recently I tried to run a Java applet and realized that I have not installed a JAVA platform. I went to Sun's website, downloaded the JAVA program and installed it. I made sure not to get the developer's version.

After installing the program, I went to the control panel to open the Java console and almost immediately the machine began to lock up. First the console locked up, then the start button and finally the mouse stopped responding. After restarting the machine, I regained control and went to the control panel to uninstall the Java program. When the uninstall shield started, it went to about 2/3 on the progress bar and the machine again locked up.

After attempting to uninstall again, I got a message telling me that a previous attempt to uninstall Java had failed and ask if I wanted to close the first attempt. When I clicked yes, it went on to uninstall Java. Since then I have tried several different versions of Java with the same results. At this point, I am not sure what to try next. The computer runs flawlessly without Java on it other than not being able to run any Java based programs. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

 

Exactly what did you get? What you need is Windows Platform - J2SE(TM) Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6. If that's what you already tried, I don't know what might be causing the problem you had.

However, be sure to disable your anti-virus software when you try installing Java. When I installed it, I also found I needed to disable Norton Personal Firewall. Since I have a router to provide some hardware firewall protection, I didnt' mind doing that; otherwise, I would not do that. But, firewall should not be an issue, since you can download a full installation file that you can install offline.

I did all that and I have installed three different versions of Java. The 5.0 Update 6 was the last one I tried. I even borrowed a CD from a friend who had the old version of J2RE on it and it did the same thing.

 

Perhaps you need to see whether you have Microsoft Java VM in your system and, if so, remove it, then install Sun's Java. See this:Information regarding the Install, use of and uninstallation of the Microsoft Java VM in Windows XP

 

It shouldn't be on there since this is an OE version of Windows XP Home and Microsoft stopped using Microsoft Java VM after Sun and Gates went their separate ways. I will check anyway, but I don't think it is on there. Thanks for the tip, never thought of that.

 

I recently had a similar problem. I had to disable Symantec in Safe Mode and uninstall Sun Java in Safe Mode, then reinstall Java in Safe Mode With Network Connections. I then rebooted and re-enabled Symantec and every thing worked just fine. Don’t know why this worked for me, but it did.

 

I never had this type of problems with Java on any computer. So far I have tried uninstalling my anti-virus, removing Spyware Doctor, shutting down my firewall, went into msconfig and disabled several other programs and still cannot run Java. I have a GE Force video card in this machine so I can run a 19 inch flat panel with a DVI hook-up and I am beginning to wonder if the video card software isn't causing a conflict with Java. It's a shot in the dark, but I emailed their tech department to see if they have ran into any issues with Java and their software. If so and they don't have a fix, I may have to live with it because I am not giving up my flat panel.

 

are you only installing the JRE (java Runtime environment.
if locking up try to go to tools/internet options
click advanced tab and then uncheck JRE 1.5 and leave JIT compiler checked.
close IE.
and relaunch browser
